Now is a great time to take simple steps to prepare for potential flooding, protecting your home, property, and neighbors downstream before heavy rain arrives.
BE PREPARED
• Clear gutters and downspouts to help prevent flooding.
• Monitor weather reports and flood advisories regularly.
• Avoid driving through flooded roads - turn around, don’t drown. Even 6 inches of moving water can sweep a car away.
• Help neighbors who may need extra support, especially the elderly or those with mobility challenges.
• Have a plan for pets or livestock. Know where they can be safely moved.
• Make sure everyone knows how to turn off utilities like electricity, gas, and water safely.
SANDBAG LOCATIONS
Residents are responsible for protecting their property during floods. Consider getting sandbags early if you live in an area prone to flooding. Salt Lake County provides free sandbags at:
Flood Control Sandbag Shed
604 West 6960 South, Midvale, UT 84047
Open Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–3 p.m.
Bring a shovel to fill your own sandbags. Visit the Salt Lake County website to learn more.
HELP PREVENT FLOODING IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
• Clear debris from drains, roadway gutters, and stream banks before stream levels rise.
• Keep yard waste and debris, such as branches, grass clippings, leaves, firewood, or lumber, away from streams and drainage channels. Once debris gets into a stream, it can block culverts, bridge crossings, or in-stream grates, leading to flooding and property damage.
• Clearing debris before storms not only protects your property but also helps your downstream neighbors.
WHO TO CONTACT
