To wrap up the podium session, @papio_anubis presented a case study on inter-troop kidnapping & adoption in olive baboons. She reported about a relationship between a resident male and the adopted infant. Her talks presents the importance of reporting rare behaviors! #MPIG2024
Next up is @fland_ speaking about morbidity and mortality patterns in wild olive baboons. Her preliminary results found a pattern of infant sickness in certain months, highlighting the need for further investigation to understand factors that influence these patterns! #MPIG2024
After lunch we had a panel discussion with faculty and undergraduates on how to involve and support undergraduates in research labs. We discussed everything from how to make stats less scary, making close knit communities, and much more! #MPIG2024
Dr. Leila Porter presented on evaluating the nutritional content of insect prey consumed by Weddellโs saddleback tamarins. Her group collected over 1,300 insects! #MPIG2024
Dr. Mitch Irwin (MPIG VP) presented on the diet, seasonality, and role of nutrient content in food species selection in sympatric frugivorous (brown lemur) and folivorous (sifaka) lemurs. He found that these species did select almost exclusively different foods! #MPIG2024

Day 2 of #MPIG2024! Our president, Dr. Katie Amato, started us off with a presentation on how human foods affect the gut microbiome of wild brown howler monkeys in Brazil. She found a significant, but small effect size of human food supplementation on gut microbiome composition๐
Opening night of #MPIG2024 was kicked off with a talk by this yearโs Distinguished Primatologist, Ben Freed of @eku! His talk described the importance of effective teaching strategies to instill conservation values in college students in primatology & across disciplines
