Following lots of the #mtbos people to 💙sky! Same username and picture over there!
I’ll keep this up for a bit until I decide what to do, but I’ll be primarily posting over there. I hope to continue the connections I’ve made with so many of you!
The number of users, especially in the #MTBoS and #ITeachMath worlds, on that blue social media space seems to have exploded in the last few days. The conversation is more civilized, the ads are nonexistent, and the feel is surprisingly hopeful. Come join us in the Sky! 😉
We’re doing piecewise functions next week and I have two whole block class periods to cover them.
Do you have a quick project/activity you love doing to practice graphing piecewise functions? Send it my way! #mtbos#iteachmath
I sponsor the book club at school (that the kids wanted to start) but they rarely even finish the books they pick because they’re so stressed. One girl told me today she feels like she can’t just read for fun because she feels guilty she’s not being productive 😭😭😭
One of my non-honors sophomores came in my room while my honors kids were doing some problems posted around the room to practice triangle similarity. We’re wrapping up triangle congruence rules in my other class so the student asked excitedly “they’re doing SAS too??” 🤣
It’s not complicated. Just feed the kids.
Also, reminder that Democrats in the legislature have proposed this in the last few sessions and Republicans haven’t even allowed a public hearing on the bill.
Tips for working with students who refuse to think through problems and just shout out random numbers when you’re working with them? 🙃
I’m trying to discern if this is just math anxiety or if there is a bigger picture issue here (like a learning disability). #mtbos#iteachmath
This student clearly struggles with algebraic thinking. Mom told me they had a teacher in 8th grade with a thick accent that was hard to understand and before that was fine in math class. They also don’t want extra support but clearly need it.
Has anyone used the “fluency by heart” activities with your high school students? My coworker and I think a lot of our IM1 students could work on their math fluency, but I’m not sure what the best way to incorporate it (or assign it) would be! #mtbos#iteachmath
And for a little additional info, I’ve played around with it and love it, my coworker hasn’t. But I have never actually “assigned” it to a group before either.
We had conferences last night so we’re off today.
I had big plans for today. Clean out the garden. Walk my dog. Mow the lawn. Clean out the fridge.
So far I have finished work for Monday and laid on my couch 🙃🤣
Hot take: the slope formula is unnecessarily complicated and may students can calculate differences in their heads or with counting tools much faster and with way less mistakes 🙃
Side note: I never thought about this until this week. Year 11. WHY.
