🚀 Maldives makes history at UNCOPUOS 2025 🌍
On June 26th in Vienna, Maldives attended the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS) for the first time and officially submitted its membership. UNCOPUOS was set up by the UN General Assembly in 1959 as the primary body to govern the exploration and peaceful use of space.
Marking a historic first, MSRO President Madin Maseeh addressed the committee on behalf of the Maldives and highlighted the country’s growing role in global space dialogue and ambition.
“Our experience managing vast maritime spaces with scarce resources and overlapping interests offers real lessons for space governance. These are insights we hope to contribute — and perspectives we believe deserve to be heard.”
Additional highlights from his speech include:
🛰️ MSRO's work over the last two years building the space sector in the Maldives
🗣️ Efforts to drive conversations for space and island nations such as the Space for Island Nations Conference
🌊 Being a founding member of the Space for Oceans Alliance (
#Space4Ocean) launched at UNOC. The alliance is meant to ensure that space capabilities are used to protect the oceans
📍 Insights and contributions the Maldives can offer to the space sector and the world’s oceans through our strategic location and advantages
🌐 That the committee must be a hallmark for international cooperation and space must remain a domain for peaceful use
We would like to extend our thanks to HEP Dr. Mohamed Muizzu (
@MMuizzu) for supporting Maldives in space by joining UNCOPUOS as a member and giving the opportunity for MSRO to represent Maldives officially on our first ever presence in this committee.
We would also like to thank the President's Office (
@presidencymv), Ministry of Defence (
@MoDmv) , MNDF (
@MNDF_Official), Ministry of Foreign Affairs (
@MoFAmv) and the Permanent mission of the Republic of the Maldives to the UN in New York (
@MVPMNY) for their unwavering support during this process.
And a special thanks to
@UNOOSA and
@aarti_holla for championing MSRO and Maldives in space.
We look forward to the voting and adoption of our membership during the UN General Assembly later this year, and contributing to ensuring outer space stays safe and accessible for everyone in the years to come.
As mentioned by the president of MSRO in the speech,
"The Maldives arrives with humility, but also with incredible resolve. We believe that space governance can and must reflect the best of multilateralism. And we stand ready to help shape a future where no voice is too small, and no space too big, to be shared.”
