The Earth Observation research outputs and tools by @Msromv are aimed at supporting stakeholders such as the Ministry in achieving their goals and commitments. All the tools and datasets the EO team have developed and are continuing to develop, are freely available to government institutions.

🌊🛰️ We are pleased to announce the launch of project POSEIDON (Pollution Observation from Space: Environmental Imagery for Detections in the Oceans & Nearshore). Funded under the European Union's Horizon Europe programme, this EUR 5 million three-year project will focus on detection, characterisation, forecasting, and source attribution to improve the identification of: - oil spills, - sewage discharge, - chemical pollutants, - and marine litter released by vessels in and around the Maldives, while supporting stronger compliance with international maritime regulations such as MARPOL (imo.org/en/about/conventions…) A combination of Earth Observation (EO) data, including optical, SAR, multispectral and hyperspectral satellite imagery; in-situ environmental water quality measurements; and hydrodynamic modelling together with advanced AI-enabled analytics will be used to better understand pollution pathways, track pollution both forward and back in time, and ultimately, identify the source of pollution. Carrying out #research #surveys in Lhaviyani and Noonu #atoll of the #Maldives to 1) accurately map #seagrass, 2) understand the role seagrass plays in managing #coastal #hazards, and 3) assess and compare #blue #carbon stored in different types of seagrass meadows. One of the outcomes of COASTS is to provide insight into how much coastal protection seagrass offers in Maldives, especially in these fast-spreading meadows, and preliminary explore whether these meadows have a net benefit or loss to the ecosystem. This will in-turn provide evidence-based data to relevant stakeholders to support seagrass management practices in Maldives. Maldives is reaching for the stars with our"Mangroves In Space" (MIS-01) initiative! 🚀🌿 We're thrilled to announce the upcoming launch of Maldivian mangrove seeds – specifically Avicennia marina, locally known as "Baru Gass" – into space. These vital seeds, sourced with incredible support from @kcitycouncil and @KK_Council , represent our nation's deep connection to coastal ecosystems and climate resilience. 🇲🇻 As part of a global effort led by @JaguarSpace_LLC , the MIS-01 project will study how these seeds respond to the extreme environment of space, including microgravity and radiation. 🔬✨ This groundbreaking research, launching via NASA’s CRS-11 mission on July 31, 2025 (Expedition 73), aims to unlock knowledge that can strengthen food security and sustainability for the Maldives and the world. 🌍 Upon returning to earth, the seeds are planned to be studied to better understand the effects of space on them.
