📌New Article!⁉️What happens when an elected opposition leader is removed from office and replaced by a former party leader through judicial intervention?
Following the court intervention in the #CHP and the return of former party leader Kılıçdaroğlu, Turkey’s main opposition has been forced into an unprecedented leadership crisis that deepens with almost every passing day. But this is not, in the end, a story about the CHP 👇
My piece argues that Turkey is crossing a new regime threshold:
♦️The crisis is part of a broader attempt to redesign political competition through the judiciary. As many political scientists argue, read alongside İmamoğlu’s arrest and the growing pressure on opposition municipalities, the aim is to portray the CHP as both “ungovernable” and “unable to govern” — while pushing Turkey from competitive toward hegemonic authoritarianism.
♦️I also argue that it marks a second phase of Erdoğanism. The first was built around the narrative of “the real people” versus the old elites. The second seeks to establish itself as the new center of the republic — embodied in the defense industry, the “Century of Turkey,” and the strong state — while writing the CHP out of the founding story it once helped create. This is a project aimed at shaping the post-Erdoğan order, not merely winning the next election.
♦️ The central question is whether CHP’s elected leader Özel can respond with a democratic counter-founding project rooted in society.
