One of the most haunting scenes in Apocalypse Now β Captain Willard alone in his hotel room β was entirely unscripted. Martin Sheen, genuinely drunk, told the crew to just let the cameras roll. What followed was real: he punched an actual mirror, cutting his thumb, then broke down sobbing and attempted to attack director Francis Ford Coppola. The crew wanted to stop filming but Sheen insisted they keep going, later revealing he was battling a drinking problem and used the scene to confront his own inner demons. The moment was disclosed years later in a conversation between Sheen and Coppola, and is visible in the Redux version of the film
