Just adding to the discussion, an article on Global Hunger Index and nutrition policy I wrote in @IndianExpress. Debates on this flawed index take attention away from very real need to improve nutrition and reduce child mortality
21 Oct 2023
In June this year @BBCMoreOrLess got in touch with me about hunger data in India and we looked at the Global Hunger Index for it. As with all of Indian data, the index should be more carefully looked at and needs better reporting. The episode is here bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3ct5b6…

Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead to talk about fishhooks or clay pots or grinding stones. But no. Mead said that the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a femur (thighbone) that had been broken and then healed. Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, get to the river for a drink or hunt for food. You are meat for prowling beasts. No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal. A broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended the person through recovery. Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts, Mead said." We are at our best when we serve others. Be civilized. Credit: Ira Byock.

Bhanwari sat on a jute cot in the verandah of her dilapidated house, gazing at the backyard, flooded in the rains. The peeling walls and the rusting windows of her house mirror how she feels in her bones these days—like the autumn of an exhausted feminist. theprint.in/ground-reports/b…

Little about the callousness of the British State towards people of colour & poor people surprises me - but even I did a WTF!! reading this 👇🏾👇🏾

You can’t believe how kind the British are. Every morning, a van pulls up outside your house in Coventry. A friendly man brings you a freshly-baked flatbread to eat. It’s just for you,not anyone else in your family. Every afternoon he comes back to make sure you’ve eaten it. 1/

It's really very simple. You treat minorities exactly like you want to be treated when you find yourself a minority in another place. EXACTLY like that. Same right to thrive. Same ambition. Same right to preserve your culture. Same right to adapt in selective ways. Same security.
