We are the Newcastle Cycling Campaign: we want a city with space for cycling, so that everyone - people of all ages and abilities - are able to choose to cycle.

Newcastle has 1051.8km of roads, 1416.8km of footway, but only 36km of cycleway. The city's safe cycling infrastructure is 3.42% the length of the road network. When you speak to candidates for next month's elections ask them if they support safe cycling for the whole city.

There's a few days left to send in your support for proposals to make Fenham Hall Drive a safer street for people walking and cycling. The consultation ends at 11:59pm on Sunday. You can read our response on the link below. newcycling.org/2026/03/impro…

We contacted Newcatle Council with @NewCycling to ask if the public realm around the new HMRC offices on New Bridge St would be as forward-thinking as the CGIs. We didn't receive a response. Now we learn that Blackett Street, 3 yrs on, remains "on pause". neptug.org.uk/blackettstreet…

In conjunction with @NorthEastPTUG we recently wrote the the city council to urge it to work towards making New Bridge Street and Blackett Street match the vision that has been sold to residents. newcycling.org/2025/10/the-f…

Given the continual disregard for the traffic restrictions on Blackett Street by private vehicles and taxis, this would ensure the safety of pedestrians and allow people to enjoy the space around Grey’s Monument without fear of being run over.

Driving is about the least efficient way to travel based on road space needed per person travelling. We hope @NewcastleCC’s new Movement strategy will recognise this.
It's been a busy day on the Tyne Bridge as it sees it's most efficient use of the year, with 60,000 people crossing in around two hours and road works to clear and reinstate to give the runners extra space. #GNR25

Replying to @NewCycling
The same cars today, parking on the cycle path. @NewcastleCC why are you allowing cars here? If it's an active worksite, then you should secure your site. If it's a cycle path, you need to ticket these cars. Please pick one.

The council have now opened this route. Thank you to those in the council and councillors for getting this fixed. The signs are still in place but can be ignored. Let us know if you see issues like this wherever you cycle. It can be fixed!
Still no update on this unfortunately. Some Cyclists dismount signs have been quickly put up. This is discriminatory to those with mobility cycles and blocks larger cargo bikes. A safe diversion needs to be in place or the fencing moved.

This sort of thing should not happen on one of the main cycle routes towards the city centre.
Somebody has fenced off the main cycle route from Heaton to the city centre, with no warning and no diversion. It's possible to get though via the bin area of Shieldfield House then through a private car park back to the road. Councillors are aware and are try to sort it.

We had a good evening at our AGM last night. There were lots of ideas to work through and great discussions were had. Thanks to all who came along. We'll be in touch with volunteers in the next couple of weeks.

There's still time to book your place at our 2025 members AGM. We'd love to see you there. Details 👇🏽 Due to the AGM on Tuesday there won't be a social ride on Friday this month, but you can still get your cycling fix with us at the Cycle Hub on Tuesday.
Come and join us for our AGM at the Cycle Hub on 8th July at 6:30pm. There'll be cycle chat with riverside views and free snacks and cake (and only a little bit of official business). Register for your free ticket here: eventbrite.com/e/newcastle-c…
