Chillingham Road Primary school had a problem with pavement parking (and driving). Last year I installed 2 benches. They were well received. So I fundraised for more benches and planters. Now it's a safe space for everyone to use. @ChilliRoad #tacticalurbanism

10 years ago my wife, the mum of our kids & the MP for Batley&Spen was killed by a far right extremist. At anniversaries I try to be optimistic about the future. But not this time. In the ten years since she was killed we have gone backwards & I fear our democracy is now at risk

#NewcastleUponTyne From the Newcastle City Council Facebook page @ facebook.com/NewcastleCityCo… Not in our city A restaurant which fly-tipped hazardous waste against Newcastle’s medieval town walls was fined £12,000 by magistrates Sunshine Restaurant Ltd on Gallowgate, did not attend and was not legally represented at North Tyneside magistrates court. However, the bench found it guilty of depositing controlled waste without a permit and treating controlled waste in a manner likely to cause pollution and or harm to human health. It was also ordered to pay £4,800 in a victim surcharge and £909.75 in costs making a total financial penalty of £17,709.75 The court heard that large panels from a fridge which contained hazardous insulation foam were dumped against the city’s 13th century walls behind Rosie’s Bar on Stowell Street on December 9 last year. Workmen were caught red-handed on the bar’s CCTV dumping the panels in the back lane against the ancient walls while the restaurant was undergoing a refit. One of the panels had hinges and looked to be part of a refrigerated unit The council wrote to the director of the restaurant, Daniel Solomon, to highlight the offences and Mr Solomon replied saying the waste was deposited by a member of staff who was unaware of what they were doing. The letter confirmed there were no arrangements to dispose of the hazardous controlled waste correctly and Mr Solomon did not use anyone or pay anyone to dispose of it correctly. Cabinet member for Neighbourhoods and Local Services, Cllr Peter Lovatt, said: “Fly-tipping is an abhorrent crime. It not only pulls down the look and feel of an area but causes all manner of environmental harms which refrigerators do especially given the gasses that they contain. “To leave this waste against the city’s ancient walls is particularly galling so I commend the quick actions of our environmental health officers in prosecuting this company on behalf of the city. “I hope the fine sends a strong message to fly-tippers that they will pay a heavy price for their crimes and the council will always prosecute them when we have evidence.”

Our engineers have begun installing a dedicated cycle bridge that will connect the Offchurch Greenway in Warwickshire to Route 41 of the national cycle network. The new bridge will keep cyclists and walkers away from passing traffic, making it an important local asset, as well as forming part of a national cycle route through the English countryside maintained by the charity Walk Wheel Cycle Trust. For the same price as upgrading Moor Farm roundabout, you could have two Northumberland Lines. So why are local politicians prioritising the roundabout?
1/ Bedlington, the 6th and final station to form part of the £336.4m Northumberland Line project, reconnecting communities between Newcastle and Ashington to the rail network, officially opened today. But local politicans are adamant it won't be the last.

The city centre car park has had its day. There is now a significant opportunity to put the land previously used for car parking to much more productive use. Land that could be used for tens of thousands of homes in city centres. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c2e4…

We're implementing the largest expansion of Sammy’s Law in city history: lowering speed limits to 15 MPH at every eligible school by the end of our first term. And we’re not waiting to get started. This year, we’re lowering speed limits at 800 additional locations to 15 MPH, bringing the citywide total for School Slow Zones to nearly 1,300 by the close of 2026. New York City’s streets should be the safest in the world - especially for kids - and City Hall is using every tool at our disposal to make that a reality as quickly as possible.

France is building 300,000 new homes annually, by using tram networks to unlock new homes. A model Britain has yet to master. Our latest report with @thomasableman (Freewheeling) and @CBTransport takes senior politicians and policymakers behind the scenes in France to uncover the structural, funding, and leadership secrets that could finally help the UK build at scale. Discover what they learned about creating "gentle density" and why tram-enabled housing might be closer to reality than you think with our full report 'Towns and Trams' launching today createstreets.com/wp-content… This project would not have been possible without funding from Steve Gooding and the @racfoundation

Replying to @TheMrLoophole
Very, very few people are capable of breaking the speed limit, even the 20mph one, on a bicycle. Legal electric-assist bicycles in the UK are limited to 15mph. The problem being identified here is with illegal electric motorcycles and e-scooters, which are nothing to do with cycling.

I really enjoyed this mini-documentary about how we design our public spaces. I read recently that, when contractors and skills are hyper-local, the outcomes are much better. Moneys spent locally are kept local, further improving a place. youtube.com/watch?v=tWYxrowo…

I'm thinking yesterday was a fluke. This morning (not pictured) I was nearly reversed into by a lifted Ford Raptor. @NewcastleCC when will you deal with this situation? If it's a worksite, fence it off. If not, prevent this behavior.
