In reality, BART is the most efficient heavy rail agency in the nation and has more unique riders now than in 2019

Lots of people piling on the Bay Area’s backbone @SFBART today with charts like this one. The implication is that service should have shrunk during the pandemic to match the loss of riders. But in that case, it would never have recovered at all. 1/
The Bay Area Rapid Transit system's labor costs rose by $150 million between 2019 and 2024. It used all that extra money to complete 73 million fewer trips. @PostOpinions looks at the financial death spiral of public transit in the Bay Area. 🧵

"The bike lanes turned Paris into the most easily traversable of metropoles. With cars squeezed out, the air cleared. Kids played on pedestrianized streets. The terraces were more fun than the parking spaces they replaced. After Covid, the city never looked or smelled so good.”

In 1905, the NY Central Railroad set out a bunch of different kinds of granite in Van Cortlandt Park to test which would stand the weather the best before building Grand Central. They’re still there. And gotta say, they were right! No. 2 still looks pristine!

Trolleybuses are good. Batteries are problematic. @SFMTA_Muni please do not reduce our trolleybus fleet. Follow Caltrain and add more electric service, not less!
Yesterday we learned that @SFMTA_Muni is full speed ahead on its Battery Electric Boondoggle despite evidence that leveraging the overhead line system to electrify the transit fleet is the cheaper, faster, and environmentally superior solution with the fewest operational impacts.

@SFMTA_Muni are there GPS issues or is there actually a 20 min gap between N Judahs inbound?

Looks like a GPS thing—a train showed up marked “not in service” and only 1 car (not 2 like every n Judah) so it’s slammed and we’re turning dozens of people away, but there is in fact a train missing on the predictions.

A colleague and I headed to Jijime on Geary from Union Square. We left from the same building downtown. He took Uber, I took the 38R on @SFMTA_Muni. Guess who got there first—and paid 92% less?

This map makes it seem like the N will be bypassing Cole Valley, but it is in fact running as usual down Carl into the sunset tunnel.

HeadsUp: Cole Valley Street Fair is today from 10am to 5pm. #SFMuni service in the area will have reroutes. sfmta.com/travel-updates/col…

Peskin has the right idea, but wrong outcome. The way to bring people together is through compelling vision for SF’s future, not simply status quo. A more resilient, communal, affordable, sustainable future that respects our communities, culture & history is an amazing platform.
18 Sep 2024
SF Supervisor @AaronPeskin spoke out today for the first time on a controversial proposition to close the Upper Great Highway to cars, criticizing it for being divisive. “At a time when we should be bringing San Franciscan together, we are dividing San Francisco,” he said.

@SFMTA_Muni You should rename the doubley-named “Powell” & “Union Sq/Market” to “Union Square” That’s what everyone calls the area! 2 names in 1 station (dep. on line) is very confusing. Multiple x/wk I have to clarify to a tourist that Powell is the same station as Union Sq.

Denver is a natural western rail hub. This would be fantastic to see. (Though there is a noticeable missing Denver to Kansas City route.)
Exciting details on pot'l future #LongDistanceAmtrak routes from @nbminor with commentary from our partners at @Colo_Rail. Challenge is if we #BuildFRPR and get even SOME of these LD routes, we'll be quickly running out of tracks at Denver Union Station. cpr.org/2024/09/03/feds-eye-…
