๐ฅ AUSTRALIA DAY ๐ฅ
January 26 - The TRUTH
โ January 26th 1788 is the day the First Fleet landed at Sydney Cove & the British raised the British flag.
There are no recorded instances of Aboriginal people being killed by the British on January 26, 1788.
While the arrival marked the beginning of conflict, initial relations were not violent.
Relations strained rapidly when the British began clearing land and fishing.
In May 1788, the first recorded violence occurred when five convicts were killed and then an Indigenous man was wounded.
The next documented violent incident was in September 1790. Governor Phillip was speared at Manly Cove but he ordered no retaliation as he understood it as a ritual response, not an assassination attempt.
โ January 26 1949
People born in Australia were legally British subjects up until January 26 1949 when people officially & legally became Australian citizens for the first time. On this day Australia formally asserted its national identity, separate from Britain.
Most of the Aboriginal people calling Jan 26 Invasion Day are half White & would not be alive today if the British had not come to Australia.
