I have no words. I’m shocked and still trying to process the loss of a dear colleague. James was a big personality, a dedicated public servant, and, most importantly, a proud husband and father. He loved serving Baker County and playing a role in NE Florida transportation projects. It will not be the same going into work and getting to talk port projects and life without him. Please keep his family in your prayers.

We are deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of our colleague and friend, James Bennett, who was killed in a car accident this morning. James dedicated his life to improving the quality of life for people in Northeast Florida, and our entire community is better for his service. He was a valued member of our leadership team, overseeing two of our largest departments—Operations and Engineering—and serving as a trusted liaison for many of our port partners. James brought extraordinary dedication, skill, and heart to everything he did. His work ethic was unmatched, and his commitment to our mission elevated everyone around him. He loved his work and the people he worked alongside, and in turn, we were all made better by working with him. Beyond his professional accomplishments, James was an exceptional human being whose spirit filled every room he entered. His loss will be felt deeply across our organization. We ask the community to join us in praying for James’ family during this extremely difficult time. We are forever grateful for his leadership, his friendship, and his service to our port and to Northeast Florida.

Last week, @realDonaldTrump said, "We’re not really building ships, and we’re going to start, and we’re going to have a very thriving shipbuilding industry.” His focus on the growth of the maritime economy is underappreciated. The maritime industrial space--shipbuilding, ship repair, and marine terminal equipment manufacturing--must continue to be a focus of investment and federal policies. It is about national security, supply chain security, and economic excellence for the United States to have a thriving maritime industry and not be wholly reliant on foreign nations.

Florida’s global reach expanded last week in Italy with stops in Milan and Genoa. 🇺🇸🤝🇮🇹 @SelectFLA opened its Milan international trade office less than a year after our first trade mission, we visited the @SaloneNautico Genoa Boat Show, met with global shipping carriers @cmacgm, @Maersk, and @MSC_Group_, and closed with the 2nd Italy-Florida ports working group. We’ve been going through the Book of Acts for the past few weeks at church, but in a way only God can do, today’s sermon perfectly landed on a verse that needed to be heard. In the face of condemnation early on in the church, instead of becoming silent, Peter and John prayed for God’s followers to speak and proclaim the gospel with boldness, with courage and to let the power of God to continue to heal and provide signs and wonders. And if we stand and speak boldly, we will be shaken and feel the presence of the Holy Spirit. The time is now to speak boldly for truth and righteousness, for the world needs the hope that only Jesus can offer. We were not given a spirit of fear.

Recently, I had the opportunity to finally visit the September 11th Memorial Pools. I felt a profound sense of sadness remembering that day 24 years ago and the innocent souls that perished. Standing where the WTC towers once stood, I was reminded of the fragility of life, but also the resilience of America during a time of great tragedy. May we never forget the cost of freedom, the lives lost in New York, Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon, and the shared responsibility of all Americans to protect the values that have guided our nation the past 249 years.
