Given the term football was first used to describe a college of ball games played in England that included both carrying the ball with your hands and kicking the ball with your feet this analogy doesn't really hold up as well as most people think.
For our American fans

I have mixed opinions on this because ultimately I think a national team in a democracy doesn't reflect supporting the government, especially a racially and ethnically diverse team like USA MNT, but I also support freedom of speech to root for whoever you want.

If you're an American and rooting against the #USMNT for political reasons you really don't get what sports is about.

Like, I agree many of those opposing USA MNT for political reasons are doing it performatively and not really providing valid points for their reasoning, but the 1st amendment supports their right to even do so. I appreciate that a lot

I'm seeing my feed flooded with posts about Europeans realizing that they were lied to about America. The consensus of their posts is that America is safer, more prosperous, and more welcoming than they were told. This might be the most powerful effect of the World Cup.

26 passes, every player touched the ball at least once. Best performance in US soccer history.

Imagine how food US Soccer would be if the average fan account was smart enough to have opinions more sophisticated than just parroting popular narratives devoid of any real world evidence and nuance.
Now just imagine how good the USMNT would be if this country’s youth soccer system wasn’t a Ponzi scheme meant to cater to suburbanites and our Division 1 league wasn’t literally plastic

Admittedly, I think low IQ fans on Twitter mean next to nothing on US Soccer and its development because Europe is littered with them too, but their understanding of our youth system and MLS are surface level if I'm being super charitable. More like out of touch with reality.

This. A lot of people complaining about this World Cup are being performative to signal to other fans on social media that they're haters too. They think being negative makes them smarter and stand out. In reality, they're just miserable and don't actually enjoy the game.
Replying to @registarodri
ur just a casual thats ok. You actually have to enjoy the sport to enjoy these games. Nobody cares or asked.

A better question is why are all the Anti-america accounts still dedicated to the narrative actually USA sucks and is gonna lose? All the actual intelligent soccer fans and analysts are recognizing this team is good and could potentially go far. How far? It depends.
why is everyone acting like the us gonna get past the round of 16, it was one game against paraguay😭

While you're point about the intensity and pressing from the US is largely accurate we desperately need to educate more people that athleticism ≠ bigger, stronger, faster. Athleticism = All aspects that help sports performance including technique and tactical IQ.
the US are ironically largely dominating the game due to being far more athletic and winning every 2nd ball after everyone was saying the US can never be good at football because its not just about being super athletic

Englishman acting like 1966 was yesterday 😂 Y’all are the Dallas Cowboys of international soccer USA! USA! USA! 🇺🇸
Best part of every World Cup is the USA fans who haven’t watched a second of football since the last one asking if they have a chance this year lol Nope bud not even a remotely slim one

The Olympics say otherwise. Mind you, Europeans invented the overwhelming majority of sports played at the Olympic games. USA has both the most Gold Medals and total medals.
It is more likely that if other countries actually decided to play US sports, they'd collect the US's chain. See Japan and baseball and some of the Europeans and Basketball.

It's not anymore. Soccer recently surpassed baseball as the 3rd most popular sport in America.

The time between each pass in soccer is merely seconds or less than a second in many cases, but apparently that's too slow for someone that enjoys a sport that the players are objectively just standing around doing nothing 90% of the game.
Replying to @OccupyLF
It wasn’t an attack on soccer. Just my perspective. If in baseball they threw the ball around for 20 minutes between every pitch, it would be as slow to me as soccer is.

The English not knowing what the word athleticism means example 10000000000. These people are just not very intelligent.
Americans thinking athleticism is the number one determiner of whether you’re good at football is a take that never fails to amuse me.

There is a lot of “Paraguay isn’t very good” talk. Full stop. Under Alfaro, they lost just once in WCQ and went 9 straight without defeat. They beat URG, Brazil, & Argentina. They were one of the best defensive teams in the 🌎. Paraguay isn’t bad. #USMNT made them look bad.

Ya, there are possibly hundreds to thousands of young boys that watched this game and now wanna be Flo Balogun when they grow up instead of LeBron James. That's why this matters so much.
Some kid watched that game from home or in the stadium tonight and had a life-altering moment. Because of this game and this World Cup, he will represent perhaps an even better USMNT in the future. That’s how important this World Cup is.

It’s been 4 years of Europeans saying “stadium will be empty”, “Americans don’t care about soccer”, “Americans can’t play soccer”… I’m proud of this tonight
