The idea that the Naira is "undervalued" stem from IMF equilibrium models that assume a theoretically correct exchange rate obtained from macroeconomic calculations. This is a flawed concept. It is the only meaningful expression of currency value at any point in time. Classifying a currency as "undervalued" can also create political pressure on government to "fix" it through intervention, moving policy away from free exchange and toward administered exchange rate regimes, reintroducing the distortions that the 2023 reforms were meant to end.
