Alma mater of Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to win the mathematics Fields Medal.
Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, one of Iran’s top science and engineering institutions, was bombed tonight, and a number of schools reportedly damaged. Founded in 1966 (as Aryamehr University), Sharif is a cornerstone of Iran’s scientific and academic life. Striking and destroying universities and schools is not just an attack on buildings,it is an attack on a country’s future.

Observers in Ireland should watch out for a space re-entry event between 08:34 and 08:40 Irish Time on tomorrow (Saturday) morning. There is an *infinitesimal* chance that debris could land in the area of the Beara Penninsula, and eastwards to the Old Head of Kinsale.
1/x New #update on the #reentry forecast of the #Kosmos 482 Descent Craft, with new orbital data, from our TU Delft TUDAT model: 10 May 7:34 /- 10.6 hr UTC Link to blogpost with more details in next tweet.

All these predictions are still /- ~4hrs, so a pass over West Cork is still entirely possible

Major cities in the spacecraft's path after the Ireland pass include slightly to the south of the following: London, Lille, Frankfurt and Budapest. Cosmos 482 remains far mor likely to fall harmlessly into the ocean, but observers should be on the lookout.

Great to see @SouthernStarIRL Skibbereen still keeping an eye on the Czar after 140 years😉 [It is virtually certain that the Cosmos 482 parachute will NOT function☹️]

Poland is especially worried: On 19 February, a SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage landed on a Polish farm, and the Polish space agency POLSA is keen to show it is on-the-ball. polsa.gov.pl/wydarzenia/komu…

Congratulations to @stdominicscabra and @StFlannans on this win @nss . The prize is named after Gerard K O'Neill, who was inspired by the Bernal Sphere, a 1929 design by Irishman J. D. Bernal - a visionary polymath who has never been properly recognised in Ireland.
St Flannan’s College First Prize in the 2025 Gerard K O'Neill/NASA Ames Space settlement design contest. Over 26,000 students participated in more than 4,900 entries from 25 countries around the world.

In 30 minutes the @framonauts will pass directly over the entire length of Ireland - the first orbiting humans ever to do so. Enjoy the view! It's a lovely day down here, so be sure to take some pics!

Luke O'Neill, a passionate defender of science. His principal message today was that ALL European universities are now open to US researchers. The ERC will fund suitable research in ANY European Union university. Come to Europe.
With the great Leo Enright, Irish science champion, at a lunch where I spoke about the importance of the European Research Council for European science and competitiveness to the Irish branch of the Association of European journalists ahead of President Leptin’s visit next week.

Whoa: The @ESASolarOrbiter spacecraft got a spectacular view of Comet ATLAS (C/2024 G3) as it passed close to the Sun. Look at that enormous, splintered tail! This comet won't be seen again for another 600,000 years.
