One last treat for the Trek fans... and Orange is the New Black fans. Please welcome Kate Mulgrew on Saturday, June 20th to the Washington State Summer Con lineup. Captain Janeway has read the reports of our rich coffee reserves and will be seeking coffee in our nebula.
Kate Mulgrew launched her acting career in 1975 with the starring role of Mary Ryan on the ABC daytime soap opera Ryanโs Hope, a part that brought her immediate national recognition and ran for several years.
She quickly moved into primetime television and feature films, appearing in series such as Heartbeat and landing major roles in Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins (1985) as Major Rayner Fleming and the popular comedy Throw Momma from the Train (1987) opposite Billy Crystal.
Her breakthrough came in 1995 when she was cast as Captain Kathryn Janeway, the first woman to command a Star Trek series, in Star Trek: Voyager. Mulgrew portrayed the resolute Starfleet captain for all seven seasons (1995โ2001), earning Saturn Awards and a devoted global fan base. She reprised the character as Admiral Janeway in the 2002 feature film Star Trek: Nemesis and later returned to the franchise in voice form as Hologram Janeway in the animated series Star Trek: Prodigy.
After Voyager, Mulgrew balanced television, film, and theater. She portrayed Katharine Hepburn in the one-woman play Tea at Five, which earned her a Lucille Lortel nomination and toured extensively.
In 2013, Mulgrew joined Netflixโs Orange Is the New Black as the fierce prison chef Galina โRedโ Reznikov, appearing in all seven seasons through 2019 and earning an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
Her recent credits include voice roles as the Museum Exhibit Narrator in the 2025 Pixar film Elio, Serpentina in The Bad Guys: The Series (2025โ2026), and Domina in Invincible (2026), alongside the lead role of Theresa Bowers in the 2025 miniseries Dope Thief.
