Today in history | From our 2026 Racial Justice Calendar
On this day in 1960, independent African states meeting in Addis Ababa resolved to impose sanctions against apartheid South Africa.
The resolution called for diplomatic isolation, economic boycotts, and restrictions on trade and transport as peaceful means of pressuring the apartheid government to end its system of racial oppression.
It marked one of the earliest coordinated efforts by African nations to use international solidarity and collective action in defence of human rights and freedom.
Today, as debates continue around the crisis in Palestine, we point to this history as an example of how non-violent measures such as sanctions and boycotts have been used to pursue accountability and justice.
The resolution reminds us that Africa has a long tradition of standing with people facing oppression and advancing human dignity through collective action.
Moments like this are captured in our 2026 Racial Justice Calendar, bringing history into daily focus.

Foreigners first, NGOs next: The buried demand inside a viral constitutional campaign dailymaverick.co.za/article/… The entire SA majority rule constitution was based on equities & equalities and was AGAINST an authoritarian state. That's the undercurrent of what is being demanded now.
The country is facing a serious crisis.
We need to act to avert it.
And address its root causes.
Moralistic postures will not provide the answer.

The majority of people at the helm of the collective violence and intimidation of outsiders will not be able to interpret this table, not will they find the argument compelling - rebuilding peaceful communities takes more than information.
Official immigration statistics from @SundayTimesZA and @StatsSA.
The vast majority of migrants into SA are from 3 of our 6 neighbours: Zimbabwe, Mozambique & Lesotho.
Virtually nobody from our other neighbouring countries: Namibia, Botswana, or Swaziland.
"Across South African radio and television, a pattern of anti-immigration framing has become the norm" - and not just amongst journalists - the march&march types have captured the narrative.
