🔐 Time for more cybersecurity news! I try to post often on this subject, and today, without a doubt, the most significant cybersecurity and safety story from the past week has to be the major cyberattack targeting AVBOB, South Africa's largest mutual funeral assurance and services provider. This was confirmed on the 8th of June 2026, and the attack by external malicious actors (or as we like to call them, E-Scoundrels) resulted in a complete shutdown of AVBOB's digital platforms and services. Branches across the country were forced to revert to manual procedures, desperately trying to find their pens and paper… 🖊️📄 A full forensic investigation is currently underway to assess whether any client personal data has been compromised. #Cybersecurity #DataProtection #AVBOBCyberattack #DigitalSafety #EScoundrels #BusinessContinuity

🌱 A Good start to June! 😉 On the 2nd of June a major carbon credit registry, Verra (verra.org), officially certified a landmark initiative in the Province of Misiones Argentina. I wish it had been in South Africa… but hey, it has to start somewhere! 🌍 SO WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? This registry represents a green flag for me, a step in the right direction for global carbon markets, one might even say the turning of a new leaf, as it is the world's first subnational government-led forest carbon program to achieve certification under Scenario 2 of Verra’s Jurisdictional and Nested REDD (JNR) Framework. The first in the world! The scale of the program spans approximately 3 million hectares, with around 1.5 million hectares of dense native Atlantic Forest located in northeastern Argentina. Over its initial six-year crediting period between 2017 and 2022, the initiative successfully generated 13.1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e) in verified emission reductions! 💚This program specifically protects the Paraná Atlantic Forest, a biodiversity hotspot that harbours over 52% of Argentina's biodiversity, including species such as jaguars. 🌟 So, why is this Certification Such a Big Deal? I am so glad you asked! This program addresses several structural flaws that have plagued voluntary carbon markets for years. (You probably didn’t even know about this issue, right?) One major problem is "carbon leakage." This occurs when a private logging company, restricted from clearing forest within a designated project area, simply drives off and does its business a little down the road. BUT! … because this program covers the entire provincial jurisdiction, carbon accounting is conducted across the whole province, which enforces a net-positive reduction in deforestation. It’s a simple, clever improvement – with a big impact! 🌳 By demonstrating that public policy can effectively integrate with international carbon finance, experts believe the model will serve as a repeatable template for others. Let’s hope others follow! 🤞 Want to know what your businesses carbon footprint is? Some ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS for the win! 🌍 Yaas! There has been a new policy announcement from our Minister Willie Aucamp, who oversees Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, about some stringent legal measures against plastic pollution, apparently the era of "business as usual" is over for companies that do not adhere to environmental laws. ⚖️🚫 Good! One key element of this new policy shift is enforcement by the "Green Scorpions." The government is said to be mobilizing the Environmental Management Inspectorate, commonly known as our Green Scorpions, to target companies that fail to comply. (I hope they also focus on SOEs as well.) 🦂🔍 Strengthening Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is central to this new policy. It's all about rigorous enforcement of South Africa's EPR regulations, which hold companies introducing plastic packaging into the South African market, including imported products, legally accountable for their items' entire lifecycle, from design through to recycling! ♻️📦 #PlasticPollution #EPR #GreenScorpions #EnvironmentalLaw #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #Recycling #SouthAfrica #WillieAucamp #ProtectOurPlanet

I’m very happy to be reporting on a trend I am very much into! Thrifting or "Pre-Loved" cloth shopping is apparently getting a level of Luxury Status. 🌟 This is being driven by our tough economic conditions but also, and more importantly eco-consciousness! 💚 High-end thrifting has dissociated from a budget necessity into a major style status symbol, with platforms like Yaga and physical vintage pop-ups in Cape Town and Johannesburg dominating youth fashion culture. 🛍️ Before you knock it, I want to make two points. 1: Some of these shops are getting really fancy and smell like perfume shops! 🌸 2: This trend supports the circular economy – gone must be the days where we wear things just for a little while, then dump and replace. ♻️ Bonus comment is that some of my favourite clothes are actually now from thrift shops! To get going, here are some recommendations: Cape Town & Surrounds • Oasis Charity Shop: Connected Claremont stores featuring clothing, bric-a-brac, and books. • Nevernew: Trendy Observatory spot for retro 80s/90s jerseys and Dr. Martens. • Waiting for George: East City consignment boutique with unique festival wear. • The Slow Fashion Collective: Observatory hub showcasing multiple online thrift brands together. • U-turn Thrift Shop: Multiple locations selling quality clothing by the kilo for charity. • Between Us Boutique: Somerset West store known for pristine, high-end pre-loved items. • SecondHand Rose: Claremont landmark stocking premium local and international designer labels. Johannesburg • Vintage with Love: Birnam luxury pre-loved boutique funding national literacy programmes. • Thrift Vintage Clothes: Braamfontein favourite for authentic street vintage and denims. • Bounty Hunters: Budget-friendly Melville staple for second-hand clothes and books. • Second Chance Clothing: Massive, organized Roodepoort store with highly affordable fashion #Thrifting #PreLoved #SustainableFashion #SlowFashion #CircularEconomy #VintageStyle #HighEndThrift #LuxuryThrift #SecondHandStyle #ThriftFinds #ResaleRevolution #EcoFashion

Another Extinction Level Event? 🤔 Yup… but this time, not of living things! 💻❌ I am warning of an App Extinction Warning! ⚠️ Analysts are sounding the alarm about an "extinction event" for standalone mobile software following Google's latest systems integration. 📱🔄 This rapid rise of deeply integrated agentic AI workflows is increasingly replacing single-purpose applications. It looks like not even robots and computer programs are safe from AI! 🤖💡 Let this be a warning to all who think they are irreplaceable or deserve impunity from change! ⚠️🔥 #AppExtinction #AIRevolution #TechChange #Innovation #FutureOfWork

A new week, and I want to start it off with SOMETHING ESPECIALLY INTERESTING! 🌟 A report released by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD for short) has shared the new Manufacturing Groups and Industrial Corporations (MAGIC) Database (oecd.org/en/data/dashboards/…) 📊, and they are highlighting a very concerning trend in global industrial subsidies. A new tool to bully one might say… 💰 So, what’s potting, you ask? I'll tell you. According to the report, these subsidies have surged to an astonishing $108 billion, accounting for 1.3% of total firm revenues. This shift could perhaps signify a start of departure from free-market trade towards a model characterized by aggressive state intervention and growing economic nationalism. I'll talk about how South Africa compares in the second part of this post. Comparing the past to get context, the current rise in industrial subsidies, compared to the events of the ‘2008 financial crisis,’ is fundamentally different. 📉 The OECD report emphasizes that this increase is structural rather than cyclical. While the prior spikes were driven by a ‘crisis’ that resulted in plummeting sales, today’s scenario unfolds alongside healthy revenues (mostly for the already rich), perhaps indicating that governments are making conscious, long-term policy decisions aimed at funding specific domestic industries. Another distinguishing feature you might find in the current subsidy landscape is the strategic use of state funding. Unlike the emergency rescue packages of the past, today’s subsidies are part of a larger "weaponisation" agenda, deployed to secure supply chains, accelerate the transition to green energy, and fortify technological dominance. 🌍(If you future plan and do scenario planning… this would all be part of a probable scenario.) The report identifies five critical sectors that receive the bulk of these subsidies, hinting at a trend towards targeted support rather than broad manufacturing assistance. These sectors include Solar Photovoltaic Cells and Modules ☀️. Semiconductors are another, and let me remind you of their role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence and, of course, defense technologies, making them a vital component of geopolitical strategy! Also, many heavy industries such as steel, aluminum, and shipbuilding are receiving government funding as well to decouple supply chains from potentially adversarial competitors. Now, my main concern from the report is the disparity in how these subsidies are distributed globally. For example, companies based in China are reportedly receiving between three to eight times more government support than their counterparts in OECD countries! This massive imbalance leads to market distortions. The ramifications of these trends can already be seen in the form of trade wars and retaliatory policies, like Western economies enacting protective measures, e.g., the US Inflation Reduction Act and European Union import tariffs, resulting in a cycle of defensive funding – which we should abbreviate to their “NATO”ing. 🤝 South Africa, little us at the southernmost part of our wonderful continent, finds ourselves in a precarious situation (as always) amidst the global "subsidy war." We have limited fiscal capacity, which does not help our confidence and future regarding domestic manufacturing and critical mineral resources – areas we must work really hard to resolve. Let me break this down into four key areas. Number 1: The scale of international state funding creates an imbalanced competitive environment that South Africa struggles to match. For instance, the US Inflation Reduction Act allocates approximately $400 billion towards green technologies, roughly equivalent to South Africa’s entire GDP! 💵 Next, Number 2! Advanced economies are prioritizing the processing of critical minerals, which directly affects Africa's resource management. The OECD notes that around 96% of Africa’s critical minerals continue to be exported in raw or semi-processed forms. (Do you know how much business we are losing here!!!!) In response, South Africa has implemented its Critical Minerals and Metals Strategy (although implementing policy in South Africa is often a misnomer). This strategy is meant to enhance value within our country by promoting domestic processing of platinum, manganese, and chrome. Number 3 is South Africa's approach to incentive frameworks. Instead of providing direct corporate grants, like China, we allocate our limited budget to socio-economic and industrial initiatives, such as programs like the Black Industrialists Scheme (which offers grants to enhance black ownership and manufacturing capacity). Another example is the funding through the Industrial Development Corporation to support small and medium black-owned businesses. This point 3 is more of an observation because who am I to say what works best in China will work here? I will say, though, that Special Economic Zones are also being utilized, providing tax concessions and incentives to attract foreign investment. Perhaps it’s time for me to move my office? 🤔 And finally, Number 4: Our local industries are facing severe risks due to this global subsidy distortion, which threatens our competitiveness. The OECD highlights that traditional sectors, like iron and steel, may suffer more due to protective measures such as the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). This mechanism could penalize our exports unless local industries quickly transition to low-carbon production – and this is a major red flag for us! 🚩 #SubsidyWar #EconomicNationalism #OECD #MAGICDatabase #TradeWars #GlobalEconomy #SouthAfrica #IndustrialSubsidies #GreenEnergy #GeopoliticalStrategy #SouthAfrica #SubsidyWar #EconomicPolicy #CriticalMinerals #Manufacturing #GreenEnergy #GlobalEconomy #TradeImbalance #Investment #Sustainability

So…. a recent parliamentary disclosure (on the 31s of May 2026) highlighted an interesting, and perhaps one might say MAJOR TACTICAL SHIFT on our municipal policing, showing a widening operational gap between the well-funded City of Cape Town Safety and Security Directorate and the national South African Police Service (SAPS). 🏛️⚖️ The Western Cape SAPS Air Wing logged just 238 drone flights during 2024/25, while Cape Town’s municipal drone unit reached 1,000 autonomous flights by 1 June 2026 — more than four times the provincial/national force in spite of that wind! 🚁📈🌬️ It would appear Cape Town is aggressively scaling its drone program and apparently the city plans to triple annual flights to 3,000 by June 2027 and is backing the initiative with a record R6.8 billion Safety and Security budget for 2026/27! 💸🔒 Shoh – that’s a lot of moola, and within that R1 million is earmarked for immediate drone hardware and software expansion and forms part of a broader R610 million multi‑year investment in safety technology. 🛠️🛰️ These developments can only add fuel to the larger political and legal struggle over policing powers, with the Western Cape and the City of Cape Town litigating against the national government, arguing that SAPS underinvestment and slow modernization justify devolving greater policing responsibility to more responsive municipal forces. ⚔️📜 #CapeTown #SAPS #Drones #Policing #SafetyTech #MunicipalPolicing #BudgetWatch #Security #DigitalTransformation #DronePolicy

🚨📢 Have you noticed that META has rolled out the "Meta One" PAID TIERS? Well, they have… 🤖💎 Meta has officially introduced paid subscription tiers in South Africa for WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. While the core apps remain free (for now), the new "Meta One" model is meant to offer advanced AI tools and premium features for the ~910,000 local small businesses that rely on Meta’s infrastructure. This will require some extra scrutiny from me—perhaps there are some opportunities here. 🔍💼 #MetaOne #MetaSA #PaidTiers #AItools #DigitalBusiness #SmallBusinessZA #WhatsApp #Instagram #Facebook #TechPolicy #PlatformEconomics #SaaS #OpportunityAlert

🌟 Legislation News 🌍 Laws influence us so very much, and today I want to share news on the National Water Amendment Bill Overhaul. Some major changes have been proposed in this new document to address the challenges of our water insecurity 🚱, but the item that has stood out for me the most is the proposed ban on private water trading 💧🚫. The new legislation targets existing provisions from the 1998 Act that allowed water entitlement holders, such as commercial farmers 🚜, to transfer or ‘surrender’ their water use rights to third parties, creating a secondary market for trading these rights 🔄. Not too long ago, in 2023, there was a landmark ruling by our wonderful Constitutional Court ⚖️, which confirmed the legitimacy of such monetization of this very important resource unless specifically prohibited by law. The new Bill ‘fixes’ this by ensuring that any surrendered water entitlements automatically revert to state control (not that they have been the best custodians of it) and enables our government to redistribute these rights to serve the public interest and address historical discrepancies in water allocation. Entitlements can only be surrendered to facilitate one's own license application on owned land, and temporary water transfers are limited to a 24-month maximum 📅. The Bill would also remove the section allowing historical water claims, which permitted the use of water rights predating 1998. The state now enforces a "use-it-or-lose-it" policy, requiring such uses to be formalized under strict licensing conditions or risk losing access altogether 🔐. There are severe penalties for not playing the game, with some violations potentially resulting in fines up to R10 million 💰 and prison sentences reaching ten years 🏛️, which seems to have been copied from the POPIA and Climate Change Act in severity of punishment. It also imposes personal criminal liability on company directors and municipal managers who fail to prevent water offenses, marking a substantial shift in corporate governance and accountability. The Bill would empower the Minister of Water and Sanitation 💧(whoever they may be at the time) with centralized authority to dynamically reallocate water rights across different catchments, provinces, or economic sectors. The government will designate highly protected Strategic Water Source areas where new water-use licenses for activities such as mining, forestry plantations 🌳, and high-impact agriculture will be strictly prohibited 🚫, aiming to preserve these vital sources. What are your feelings and opinions on this? 🤔💭 Either way, we must take better care of our water resources and let’s not forget that dysfunctional municipalities are the worst polluters and wasters of water 🏭💦. #WaterConservation #LegislationNews #WaterRights #Sustainability 🌍

A business ponder and question… 🤔Is a business owner’s mental health less important than their colleagues’? 🤷‍♂️ Of course not, but in practice (especially for SMEs), it does often take second position. 💼That’s how it works. It’s the bed made and the one they need to sleep in. Also, they are the one person who cannot resign due to emotional stress… #MentalHealthMatters #BusinessOwner #SMEs #EmotionalWellness #WorkplaceWellbeing #SelfCare #Entrepreneurship

🌟 WHERE ARE OUR FRIENDS? 🤔 Ready to pay for friendship? 💸 Heard of the Companionship Economy? 🌐 Well… it was only a matter of time for some clever capitalistic and opportunistic people to see an opportunity and commercialize by addressing loneliness with an app 📱. You probably didn’t know that the ‘Companionship Economy’ is already a multi-billion dollar market 💰 driven by our widespread loneliness, and this service treats human connection and emotional validation as a service 🤝. I fear this trend might grow… so let me share a little about the business models. 📈 The first model is the ‘Commercialisation of Presence’, particularly evident in East Asia 🌏, especially China 🇨🇳, where the market locally termed ‘pei ban jing ji’ is projected to be worth up to 500 billion yuan (approximately $74 billion 💵 // or the current price of a penthouse in Cape Town 🏙️). Consumers of these services hire ‘gig-economy workers’ to share experiences 🌟, such as eating 🍜, going to the movies 🎬, visiting exhibitions 🖼️, or even hiking! 🥾 There are also specialized roles like elder escorts for hospital visits 🙌 and also paid video-game partners 🎮 hired via platforms like Bixin to provide lively commentary and banter 🎉. The second model revolves around marketed platonic real-world services 🌈, which are popular mostly in Western markets 🌍. These services approach commercialized connection through structured, professional platonic relationships 🤗, driven by public health concerns. Paid friendship apps like Bumble (bumble.com/) for Friends utilize swiping mechanics for entirely platonic matches 🔍. Platforms like Talkroom (talkroom.com/) and Rent A Cyber Friend (rentacyberfriend.com/) charge per-minute fees for simply chatting online with a responsive listener 💬. Another approach in this 2nd model is the emergence of walk-and-talk services 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️, where individuals hire walking companions to e-stroll through public spaces like parks 🌳, ensuring an active face-to-face conversation void of the complexities or expectations of traditional friendships. The third model features hyper-realistic AI companions 🤖, representing the digital frontier of the companionship economy. This segment relies on generative artificial intelligence, with the AI companion market projected to reach hundreds of billions of dollars 💹. It utilizes platforms like Character.ai or Wink (getwinkapp.com/), where millions of users are chatting every day with hyper-customized AI avatars that remember their preferences, offer unconditional validation, and respond almost instantly ⚡. As a future thinker and change champion 🌈, I struggle to find it within myself to want to support this emerging trend 😕, but there you have it. #CompanionshipEconomy #LonelinessSolutions #FutureOfFriendship #AIConnections #GigEconomy #MentalHealthMatters #PlatonicConnections #PaidFriendship

#Trendnews 📰✨, and something to ponder 🤔 about as an e-marketing guru… (maybe you are one?) 🚀 This post is all about a trend called the “Anti-Algorithmic Shift.” 📊🔄 With some observation 👀 on the goings-on and happenings in South Africa 🇿🇦 over recent years, there is a hint (perhaps an understatement) of transformation redefining the digital habits 💻 of South Africans, especially younger ones 👩‍💻👨‍💻, signaling perhaps a change in how they and we engage with the internet 🌐. (Look at me writing about these young people as if they are a species of their own, observed from afar 🕵️‍♂️ by generations older than them. Yeah, yeah, I know, in many ways, they do appear to be another species, and they are the future 🚀, so it's good to pay attention 👂.) Back to the trend. For over a decade, or more, what year are we in again? 2026, right… 📅 Social media has predominantly been about accumulating likes 👍, engagement 💬, views 👀, and lots of followers from a global audience 🌍 that we want to love us ❤️. The winds of change 🌬️ right now are blowing us towards an increase in prioritizing privacy 🔏, trust 🤝, and e-hyper-local relevance over public exposure, creating smaller cliques of peers 👥, more exclusive neh! This new phenomenon begins with the ever-growing fatigue 💤 towards algorithm-driven social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram 📱, which previously served as a conduit for real authentic connection 🤝. These platforms have morphed into spaces totally saturated with algorithmically curated, often very impersonal content 🧠. Mine shows nothing but Tom Daley, BMWs, cookies 🍪 and political adverts 🗳️. Of course, the algorithms might get better… but I think they will get far worse before they do 🌀. For now, it's safe to say that users will become more alienated 🛸 by the perpetually commercialized media, and our desire to have a genuine e-community will grow 📈. It’s a fact that the mental toll 🧠 of public postings has escalated, aggravated by online toxicity ⚠️, cancel culture ⛔, and the relentless pressure to maintain a flawless online persona 🌟. Ad saturation has also turned platforms into shopping spaces 🛍️, nudging social scrollers to look for other spaces and more intimate environments, which we will now call “Gated Micro-Communities.” 🏰 In these e-gated estates 🌐, young South Africans are starting to sculpt ✨ their online lives within private, invitation-only spheres 🔐, and Private WhatsApp Broadcast Channels 📢 have emerged as popular private and alternative spots, enabling cultural curators 🎨, DJs 🎧, and fashion designers 👗 to engage directly with audiences without the invasive nature of public platforms. (Of course, this poses a bit of a security risk for younger users – so parents be aware of this. 🛡️) Substack 📬 is another tool I can mention that is gaining traction with South African writers 🖋️, artists 🎨, and political commentators departing from traditional media in favor of subscriber-only newsletters 📰. These platforms foster deeper, personalized exchanges with readers and digital consumers, free (for now) from the loudness of public threads. Discord servers 🖥️ (initially a sanctuary for gamers 🎮) have also evolved into niche communities dedicated to diverse subcultures, ranging from thrift-flipping and sneaker trading 👟 to underground music 🎶 and mental health support 💬. Beyond the above-mentioned digital interactions, this shift fosters a cultural renaissance rooted in hyper-localism 🎭 and we have seen some gatekeeping of these local subcultures emerge and serve as preservation keepers. For example, some curators in areas like Braamfontein and Woodstock intentionally withholding event and product details 📍 from public algorithms. In these spaces, a very subtle nod can replace public promotion, where one must be "in the know" to access exclusive happenings ✨. These digital e-communities also transcend their realm, materializing in real-world gatherings and experiences like a picnic at Emmarentia Dam 🧺 or a pop-up event at some market in Noordhoek. This Anti-Algorithmic movement is part of a much bigger trend (although it's still in its infancy) 🤖 that shows a desire among South Africans to reclaim digital spaces 🌌 that align with their values of privacy and community. My questions are we prepared to pay 💰 for these sanctuaries because the platforms we use need to cover costs some other way if we are avoiding their marketing efforts? If we are not paying, we are the product. 🛍️ Things to ponder… 🤔 #AntiAlgorithmicShift #Digital #jeanpierremurraykline
