There are over 5 million Canadians of Irish origin.
Itโs one of our founding nations: see the royal Harp of Tara on our coat of arms, and the harp & shamrocks represented all over Parliament Hill & our national institutions.
Irish & Canadian history are closely intertwined, from Canada being the primary refugee of Great Famine emigres, to the troubles spilling over in the Fenian Raids, the central role of Thomas Darcy McGee in Confederation, and so much more.
Canada played a large role in the Irish Peace Process.
Ireland has gone from being the poorest to the richest country in Europe (after micro state Luxembourg) in three decades.
Ireland is the 8th largest source of investment in Canada, with a stock of investment at ~$25 billion.
It was one of the strongest and earliest supporters of the Canada-Europe Trade Agreement. Irish leadership is importantnin efforts to get final ratification of CETA.

Yesterday in the UK, a judge ruled against four direct action activists who damaged Israeli military assets owned by Elbit Systems in 2024. They are facing years of jail time and were sentenced for an โact of terrorismโ, for attempting to slow down the weapons production and movement from the UK to Israel where these weapons and technology are used in daily acts of terrorism and genocidal violence against Palestinians in Gaza. We live in a time where the people of conscience who try to stop genocide are labeled as terrorists and the war profiteers and politicians who make the laws to defend them enjoy full impunity.

LGBT Jews exist and belong in Pride Month celebrations. Period. No litmus tests. No weird questions about allegiance to movements or ideologies. No bans on Jewish symbols. If queerness is truly a rebellion against the status quo, and humans have never been one dimensional, it only seems right to accept all of who we are too.

On June 11, the Commissioner-General ad interim of UNRWA, Christian Saunders, took the decision to terminate the employment of 70 UNRWA staff members in Gaza with immediate effect. The decision was taken further to an assessment of the safety and security of UNRWA operations in Gaza.

Canadians have a serial problem with Tall Poppies. We're bad at celebrating our success, and love backbiting.
It isn't a good instinct, particularly when it means American alternatives fill the void when we cut one down to size.
This pathetic attitude is among the worst things about our political culture in Canada and I cannot reject it enough.
It gets cloaked in the language of progressivism but it is deeply cynical, ugly, and regressive.
Story time!
Growing up, I was hugely inspired by RIM (BlackBerry). It was one of the reasons why I wanted to go to Waterloo.
I thought it was so cool one of the most innovative companies on earth was an hour away from home.
In fact, my program, Nanotechnology Engineering, was able to exist in part due to the philanthropy of Mike Lazaridis, who funded the Institute of Quantum Computing and Nanotechnology (along with the Perimeter Institute for theoretical physics, which is a brilliant asset for the province and country). Balsillie, for his part, has spent tens of not hundreds of millions of his personal wealth on advocacy and institutions to make Canada a better place. But he too was castigated in our media.
Through high school, I saw how Canadas media took an axe to RIM founders (Mike and Jim), and basically cheered on the decline of the business against competition from Apple and Google.
It was a complete disgrace.
Well, in 2013 I got my second co-op job there, just as they rolled out BB10 (the QNX operating system). 6 weeks into my co-op, my entire department was laid off (Modems/Semiconductors).
Nearly every one of my colleagues ended up moving to the US. Some of the most capable talent on earth, poached in weeks. It was loss that was absolutely devastating to witness.
I have no doubt people like Bruce cheered on the spectacle, just like he would cheer the downfall of Shopify if it were to ever happen; despite the champion itโs been for the country, the thousands of good jobs itโs created, and all the spin-off businesses that have created huge wealth for Ontario.
Well let me be clear that I will have none of this nonsense.
