"Karnataka's excise reform draft report, recently made public, is perhaps the first document in the history of independent India to take a rational approach to alcohol. At its core is the concept of social harm and how to price it. The report recommended switching to a system based on the amount of alcohol in the bottle, regardless of what it calls itself or how it is marketed, plus a form of consumption tax. It is a unicorn of a policy: sensible, remunerative and politically feasible."

The INC should be protesting before the American Embassy....dare the Modi govt to stop them.
Update : People removed a Donald Trump poster from an auto rickshaw and urged auto drivers not to display US related symbols on their vehicles, reflecting rising public sentiment after 3 sailors were killer. The auto drivers are more courageous than Laal Aankh

In 1902 the celebrated Chinese scholar Kang Youwei wrote to his disciple, Liang Qichao, that India was a “lost country”, adding that he was “confident that the Indians have no way to restore their country in more than 1,000 years”. How could he get it so wrong? And what does that teach us?

State of Indian democracy: even Opposition *MPs* are now allegedly facing physical threats from the BJP.
Jun 12
#WATCH | Delhi | "... BJP operatives were sitting inside the homes of the MPs who hadn't signed. Their homes were demolished. All of this is being orchestrated from Nishikant Dubey's house. I have a contact inside his house who keeps me informed about what's going on," says TMC MP Kirti Azad on the 20 rebel TMC MPs. He says, "BJP operatives were sitting inside the homes of the MPs who hadn't signed. The police were guarding from the outside. Their homes were demolished. Their families were intimidated and threatened. Many have come forward out of fear... Bapi Haldar's house was completely wrecked. He was trembling. He is a first-time MP, a young man. There are two others as well. You can see that the first eight are listed in a different ink, while the next group, from fourteen to eighteen, is in black ink. Three Muslims are included in that group, too. Now, the BJP needs them as well, even though they usually badmouth them, because they want a two-thirds majority. They did the same thing to Mitali Bag. She is a first-timer too. She comes from a rural background and has lived a simple life. Her house was also trashed, completely vandalised. Mala Roy is the latest one. She signed the day before yesterday. Saayoni did it separately. She didn't meet openly but signed separately. She met Bhupender Yadav the night before... All of this is being orchestrated from Nishikant Dubey's house. I have a contact inside his house who keeps me informed about what's going on... Prakash Barik, who resigned, did so from right outside Nishikant's house. Nishikant is a shrewd businessman with plenty of money. I know him well. He’s from my hometown. He’s like a younger brother. But I know what his game is... First, there was the meeting with Bhupender Yadav (with rebel MPs). Then Suvendu Adhikari arrived with flowers. It’s obvious this is a BJP ploy..."

And now the High Court will take six years to dispose this election petition.
#BREAKING: Supreme Court dismisses Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan's plea challenging the rejection of her Rajya Sabha nomination for the Madhya Pradesh by-election. • Court holds that challenges to rejection of nomination papers must ordinarily be pursued through an election petition. • Refuses to carve out an exception under Article 32 even in cases alleging a "glaring" or "manifestly illegal" rejection of nomination. • Reiterates that Article 329(b) bars judicial interference during the election process and that courts cannot create categories of cases warranting mid-election intervention. • Notes the consistent line of precedents beginning with N.P. Ponnuswami and followed in subsequent election law decisions. • Clarifies that all rights and contentions of the petitioner remain open in an election petition and that observations in the order will not prejudice such proceedings. #SupremeCourt

No fan of the RSS but there are plenty of civil society organisations which do not register themselves. There is no law mandating registration of a group of people with common purpose. The bigger question is how are they funded.
'In a Country Where Even a Street Vendor Must Register, How Can RSS Be Exempted?': Priyank Kharge 'Let the RSS call me to its Keshava Krupa headquarters. Let them show me the law under which they are exempted from being accountable to the government.' thewire.in/government/in-a-c…

Authoritarian regime abhor bad news.
IMPORTANT: First anniversary of Air India Ahmedabad crash in which 260 people died. Still NO SIGN of the final report. Lots of assurances but still NO report. Without a final report, there can be no closure for the victim families. Interestingly, UK newspapers have asked more searching questions than we have at home. Will the TRUTH ever come out? Or will it be another case of NO DETAILS AVAILABLE? (NDA). Prayers and thoughts with victim families: they surely deserve better 🙏

Remarkable. An Aussie judge reprimanding his colleagues on the bench for delaying judgments after trials.
In an extraordinary rebuke, Federal Court judge Ian Jackman has named and shamed six fellow judges who have failed to deliver decisions in cases up to three years after hearing them, condemning the “egregious” delays as “a real and growing threat to the rule of law in Australia”. Journalists rely on the free labour of experts for the purposes of their daily reporting. I have spent a lot of my free time explaining IP/pharma to journalists. Nothing unethical with podcasters using journalistic work as long as they give due credit.

Newsclick shut down, journalists lost their jobs - young reporters were called suspects. There should be an enquiry against the delhi police and ED officers in charge and should be made to pay damages
3 Oct 2023
NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha and HR Head Amit Chakravarty have been arrested. Delhi Police statement doing the rounds says a total of “39 male suspects and 9 female suspects” were questioned. As we had reported earlier, these “suspects” include young reporters and freelance journalists.

Kudos to @shivnarayan01 of @newslaundry for his early warning back in 2024 about Jackson Laboratory's quality track record. Unfortunate that the powers in charge did not listen to him.
5/n Since then Jackson Labs has been blacklisted by multiple state procurement authorities. @shivnarayan01 of @newslaundry did a deep dive on the company back in 2024. @AbhinandanSekhr newslaundry.com/2024/01/17/e…

A deeply worrying thread about a pharma company with a horrible track record across the country, now accused of supplying injections that caused the deaths of many young mothers in Rajasthan. It shows you how broken the drug regulatory system is in India.

Will our judges sit Saturday morning to stay today's order in Prabir Purkayastha's case? A rare order that reveals how Modi weaponizes ED to stifle dissent & kill democracy. When will courts stop taking ED on face value? Why every political ED case is conspiracy against nation?
