ALT Council notes: · Half of new cars are too wide for typical 1.8m on-street parking bays, and SUVs are often 2m wide, · Wider, taller, heavier cars cause extra damage to roads and are more likely to kill or injure people walking, wheeling or cycling, · Serious and fatal road collisions in London cost £1.2 billion in 2024, · Petrol and diesel SUVs burn 20% more fuel, while electric SUVs require additional resources and critical minerals for batteries. Council resolves: · That the Transport and Air Quality Committee Chair requests officers propose parking charges based on vehicle size and emissions for the 2026/27 budget.
