People want better control of their lives, to do things they like and to avoid things they don’t like/prefer. High income combined with discipline and luck gets you into that position.
High income with no flexibility in deciding what your day looks like feels like a golden cage.

Unpopular opinion:
Many people don’t actually want financial freedom … FIRE is ☠️
What they really want is a higher income so they can upgrade their lifestyle…
Those are two very different things.

Privileged take: Sometimes staying in a hotel feels like a downgrade. Despite great views, excellent service, and a wide variety of food to choose from, the smaller size of the room compared to the house feels constraining.

Broadly agree with it. FIRE requires a combination of high income, discipline, and luck. The combination of all three is rare, which is why you see very few FIREd individuals in real life.
It is a chase that would leave many frustrated especially those with an average income.
It is time we change the objective function of FIRE to “fullness of life” by increasingly doing more of what you like and less of what you don’t.
