In June 1861, Thaddeus Lowe ascended 500 feet in his balloon, the Enterprise, and sent a telegraph to President Abraham Lincoln, to prove how balloons could support Union efforts. He would soon become chief aeronaut of the newly formed Union Army Balloon Corps.
