ALT Image shows the NCIL webpage for the Instructional Intensification Toolkit. Text reads: This toolkit provides information on how instruction can be intensified when students who are receiving intervention are not making desired growth in Tier 1 and Tier 2 reading instruction. Use of assessments in the intensification process is described, and the “what” and “how” of instructional intensification is presented along a set of lessons and teaching materials.
You will learn: How to intensify instruction, How to use a specific set of lessons for targeting early reading skills, and Considerations in the intensification process.
This toolkit includes: Intensification Framework, Intensification Lessons & Teaching Materials, and Supporting Resources.
Assessments specifically designed to determine risk status relative to predictive early reading skills & follow-up diagnostic tools that inform skill level needs for instruction/intervention are critical to the effective implementation of NJTSS-ER. #SoR#literacy
ALT Photo shows a student working through a diagnostic phonics inventory. Assessments specifically designed for multi-tiered systems are individually-administered universal screening assessments, diagnostic inventories, and hybrid screening/diagnostic assessments. Other types of assessments serve different purposes such as computerized adaptive achievement tests and leveled reading assessments.

Knowledge, skills, & resources are needed to support the early reading development of all students... it's MUCH MORE than curricula purchases or one-off trainings. A framework of NJTSS-ER results in a continuous cycle of data-informed instructional decision-making. #literacy#SOR
ALT First step is to collect data on the early reading proficiency of all k through 3 students through the administration of a universal screening assessment. Data are used to determine the extent to which core reading instruction is enabling students to meet benchmark expectations, & to identify which students may benefit from additional intervention supports to close skill gaps. In Tier 1, ongoing curriculum-embedded assessment data are collected & analyzed in order to inform differentiation & adjustment to core needs. Tier 1 implementation is also monitored to ensure instruction is being delivered with fidelity. For students who did not reach benchmark expectations on universal screening early reading indicators, diagnostic skill inventories are administered to determine which specific skills to target for intervention. With this data, interventions are planned & implemented. Ongoing progress monitoring is administered to determine student progress towards goals.
