Last Friday, CDOT employee Riley O'Neil was killed after a driver opened a car door into an unprotected bike lane and forced Riley into oncoming traffic. Riley worked passionately on the CDOT Complete Streets team and previously led the bike parking program - he even got the bike rack installed outside our old office on Belmont. Riley was deeply committed to making our streets safer for all users to enjoy - a goal we share. Our team is heartbroken for Riley’s family and friends and the entire biking community. Please join us in honoring Riley by referring to the many bike racks you see throughout the city as "Riley Racks" - and if you drive, please slow down and always look out for cyclists before opening your doors to avoid another needless tragedy.

This week, we concluded a series of hearings in the Illinois House on data centers, where we heard about how data center development affects residents and communities, energy use and the impact on utility bills and finally, water usage and conservation. My takeaways? We need to put guardrails in place to ensure data centers pay their share of new energy demand, utilize renewable energy sources, and adhere to strict water efficiency standards. It's critical that we protect residents from escalating energy costs, limit pollution and noise emissions from diesel generators, and require an assessment of community impacts from data centers along with transparent reporting on resource usage. We must put people first as we work to address the challenges presented by rapid data center development in Illinois and beyond. nprillinois.org/illinois/202…

An important step forward to elevate the issues important to people with disabilities in Illinois...thank you @RepBobMorgan for advancing this critical legislation.
My bill, HB 862, has passed the House - a major step forward for disability rights in Illinois. This bill creates the Dept. of Disability Advocacy and Guardianship, elevating the current commission to a Cabinet-level agency to strengthen accountability and transparency. (1/2)

Today I joined @DanaCBS2 on @cbschicago to discuss a series of hearings we're holding on data centers in Illinois. Our hearings have explored the impact of data centers on our utility bills, environmental concerns regarding air quality and water usage, and local community impacts. As the technology advances rapidly and demand grows, we must ensure we have guardrails in place and that people and communities come first. cbsnews.com/chicago/video/re…

We discussed the elected school board, student wellness, the CPS strategic plan, and of course, education funding. As always, I continue to prioritize maximizing resources for our schools - so every Illinois student has access to the best quality education possible.
