The Teacher Training Roundtable reaffirmed a shared understanding: improving literacy outcomes requires coordinated action, stronger accountability, and meaningful investment in teacher development and support. Here are some reflections from our participants about the day.

On 21 May, the Right to Read Campaign convened educators, researchers, policymakers, legal experts, civil society organisations and education stakeholders in Johannesburg for the Teacher Training Roundtable under the theme: “Together Toward Reading Proficiency: Aligning Teacher

and consistency of teacher training nationwide. Participants engaged in robust discussions on what meaningful reforms could look like, how they could be implemented in practice, and what coordinated action is needed to strengthen teacher training and improve literacy outcomes.

At the Human Rights Festival at Constitution Hill, we met people strengthening literacy in their communities, from supporting crèches to guiding parents early. These efforts show literacy starts beyond classrooms. The Right to Read Campaign grows through these connections.
