🌎 The World Players Summit comes to a close, but the work continues. From the ILO Guidelines to health & safety, organizing and governance, this week made one thing clear: athletes are workers. 🙌 Big shout out to @MLSPA, @NFLPA, @AFLCIO, and all our delegates and speakers.

“The IOC president again defended her stance against paying athletes for competing or winning medals at the Games, despite mounting criticism from Olympians and athlete advocacy groups who believe competitors should receive a greater share of revenues.” @insidethegames @iocmedia Our proposed interim solution: globalathlete.org/our-word/i… insidethegames.biz/articles/…

IOC President Kirsty Coventry has reaffirmed her opposition to Olympic prize money, arguing that the focus should remain on supporting all athletes rather than paying competitors for participation or medals. Speaking after the IOC Executive Board meeting in Lausanne, Coventry acknowledged the ongoing debate but said the Olympic Movement’s broader responsibility is to expand initiatives such as scholarships and athlete support programmes, ensuring benefits reach every Olympian. 📷: IOC Media insidethegames.biz/articles/…

“I think this is a turning point and the IOC has an option. They can either change on their own or have forced change where there’s an uprising from athletes. And I think we are seeing the beginning of it now more than we’ve ever seen it before… If they (the IOC) don’t start thinking differently, I think you’ll see legal challenges and forced change that will put them in a corner.” @RobKoehler2 with @AlexChapmanNZ @SportNationNZ @iocmedia

Why has the U.S., the richest and most successful sporting country in the world, never produced a men's soccer superstar? In a word: culture. (And a "broken" system.) Full piece, free to read @TheAthleticFC: nytimes.com/athletic/7342178…

As the 2026 tournament kicks off, *The World Is Worried About The #WorldCup* @FIFAcom should heed fan groups from @3LionsPride to the @FootieMob to the Galactic Ambassadors, who say the World Cup should be a global celebration of soccer—not a cause for fear about abusive US immigration arrests, anti-LGBT policies, and ugly exclusion on the basis of nationality; My article in @Forbes: forbes.com/sites/minkyworden…

“as a 28 year old with a young family, a mortgage, it's very hard to continue to go. Like we fund these things ourselves, for me to come to trials cost me $5,000, for me to race tonight cost me $36. It's a sport that takes a lot from you. And I really hope that from the top right down, there's going to be some change…because I don't see why you would probably choose this avenue, honestly. As sad as it is." Kyle Chambers via @StateOfSwimming

“GA maintains that the underlying objective remains the achievement of a collective bargaining agreement featuring fair revenue sharing and formal athlete representation. In the meantime, it proposes immediate measures that would allow the IOC to provide meaningful financial support without creating a traditional employer-employee relationship.” @insidethegames @iocmedia insidethegames.biz/articles/…

“The proposal presents measures which Global Athlete believes the IOC could implement immediately, including a $NZ43,000 ‘Olympic Participation Indemnity’ for every Olympic athlete, the creation of an ‘Olympic Athlete Revenue Sharing Fund’ which would be financed through an allocation of IOC revenue, and greater transparency regarding IOC expenditures, executive indemnities and athlete support spending. The submission also calls for the liberalisation of athlete name, image and likeness (NIL) rights and Rule 40 – a by-law in the Olympic Charter stating that only approved sponsors may reference "Olympic-related terms".” @SportNationNZ @AlexChapmanNZ sportnation.nz/article/athle…

Olympic 'solidarity' is painted as universal. It's not - far from it. The vast majority of elite athletes who fuel that economy see no direct recompense for the biggest moment in their sports careers. What is 'solidarity', who gains & what independent oversight is in place?

No prize money for athletes @Olympics can presumably be matched by no per diem for officials @Olympics ! The Olympics can’t run without either so why should only one (the most important one) not be compensated?

“At the Olympic Games I feel that we have a broader responsibility to try and find ways to directly support every Olympic athlete that comes to the Games” Kirsty Coventry @iocmedia Our recent proposal for an Olympic Participation Indemnity “would provide immediate financial relief and serve as an important first step toward a more equitable Olympic system” without the IOC needing to generate more money. “The athlete activist organization Global Athlete published a proposal on Sunday to pay athletes participating in the Olympic Games an honorarium of $25,000 and asks to eliminate regulations related to athlete communications in Rule 40 of the Olympic Charter. The proposal is an interesting move away from the drumbeat of stars for prize money for the Games to a broad-based approach. This is only an interim approach for Global Athlete, which has demanded “a collective bargaining agreement that includes fair revenue sharing and athlete representation.” @Sports_Examiner @iocmedia thesportsexaminer.com/panora…
