Remembering the chaplains on #DDay80. I wrote this 5 years ago in @MethRecorder about Leslie Skinner. He landed on D-Day with the Sherwood Rangers, dedicating himself to supporting his comrades and burying the dead. A remarkable Christian witness in war: "I go with them" he said.

Very sorry to hear Prof Jürgen Moltmann has died. It was one of the highlights of my time at CCJ to organise this lecture. Just weeks before the first Covid lockdown, a packed room hung on his every word. "Truth is the first act of freedom, however painful the truth may be."
We are saddened to hear of the death of Prof Jürgen Moltmann, one of the most influential Protestant theologians of recent times. CCJ was honoured to host Prof Moltmann at one of his last speaking engagements in the UK, in 2020, on Jewish and Christian theologies after Auschwitz

David Stewart is a key person in the book I am writing on Christians in the aftermath of the Holocaust. You can read more about his Belsen pamphlet in my @enghistrev article, "The True Physicians Here are the Padres" academic.oup.com/ehr/article…
Reverend David Stewart was sent to Bergen-Belsen as a British Military Chaplain in May 1945 In this pamphlet he describes what he saw in the camp shortly after its liberation, including conversations with people about their lives before they were deported bit.ly/4afKmrf

"the Methodist church was a place where what was high and mighty mixed with the ordinary and the day-to-day..." A beautiful essay, by Robert Colls, on Methodist culture and what its loss would mean not just for us Methodists but for British democracy.
“The closure of a Methodist chapel on Tyneside tells a story of England’s dwindling congregations – and highlights the loss of a vibrant community life that cannot be replaced.” 🖊️ Robert Colls newstatesman.com/politics/re…

This long journey would not have been possible without a lot of support from many people, not least a place @uclhjs and funding from a @wolfsonfdn scholarship. Thank you!

Positive news and a pinch of Jewish humor. Returnees from Gaza have confirmed that historian Alex Danzig, held by #Hamas, is alive, fairly well, and even giving lectures to fellow hostages. Alex’s son in law, this morning on Israeli radio: “Well, at least he now has a captive audience”.
Alex Danzig (75) is a renowned historian who has dedicated his life to Holocaust education. He spent the last 30 years working at @yadvashem. He has been missing since Hamas terrorists attacked his home in Nir Oz. We stand in solidarity with his family and pray for his return.

5 years ago I was in Jerusalem for a @yadvashemschool seminar and on the 100th anniversary of the Armistice I laid a wreath at the @CWGC cemetery. It feels like an even more poignant memory this year, and my thoughts continue to be with all my friends at Yad Vashem.

Especially this week there are few places I'd rather be than @HolocaustCentUK. Today we joined with 17 survivors in celebrating 28 years of a wonderful interfaith space for Holocaust education.
