From my partner who works in West #Berkeley: Before the #Tsunami warning was lifted, he and his colleagues were evacuated to the top of a parking garage with several dozen preschool kiddos (who, from the sounds of it, totally kept their cool).
For @guardian, I spoke with @KamilahVMoore about the fight for #reparations in CA. She told me that despite legislative losses, the movement has "truncated the hope gap" of Black Americans — reparations are no longer some nebulous idea, but a real possibility.
Mind-boggling investigation by @highcountrynews & @grist finds at least 5 tribal nations are paying states for access to more than 57,700 acres within their own reservation borders. Part of a much larger problem of state trust lands on Indian reservations: hcn.org/issues/56-10/states-…
Absolute wildest finding here: Princeton University appear to own (or have owned) a Houston-based fossil fuel company that's earned the school nearly $140 million over the last decade. The university declined to comment. theguardian.com/us-news/2024… via @dharnanoor
For @GuardianUS, I’m looking to speak with Jewish Americans who have had difficult conversations with friends/family members/colleagues about Israel/Palestine over the past year and are willing to share.

I started reporting this piece before giving birth to my son last spring. Needless to say, the topic holds new resonance for me today. I am beyond grateful to the moms who took the time to speak with me about their grief and hope for the future.
I follow several cooking accounts on TikTok (shh...) and one of my faves is a Cambodian former refugee who shares beautiful, accessible recipes in English and Khmer.
After months of watching her videos, I noticed she lives in Oakland.

Remarkable. The University of Iowa's student-run newspaper purchases two area weeklies. This is what higher ed -- as institutions serving communities -- can do and should do. dailyiowan.com/2024/01/29/da…
The idea of having young journalists cut their teeth by covering small town. news is wonderful. You can do all the crime and UI stories you want, but there are other skills you fan learn by covering small town city council meetings and community events.
