I'm really proud of this paper. Huge team effort to get this done, and lots more work to do so we can be even more accurate, but this paper is a snapshot of where we are now. I hope it's a useful reference for those using SuperCam or calibrating their own instrument.
How do Mars Rovers know what rocks are made of? In a new paper (Free until March 1), led by Astro's Ryan Anderson, the SuperCam team details how they use #MachineLearning and lab data to estimate the chemistry of rocks on Mars by zapping them with a laser ow.ly/fgVY50HtmFz

Mauna Loa is erupting! Follow @USGSVolcanoes for updates! Astro scientists will often use footage and images like these to understand how lava could've flowed on other planets and moons!
This short video shows thermal camera footage of the onset of the #MaunaLoa eruption from the volcano's summit. The temperature in degrees C is shown by the colored scale bar on the right. For additional information visit: usgs.gov/volcanoes/mauna-loa… #MaunaLoaErupts

Hi @LenovoLegion I've had my Legion 7 for 14 months (2 months past warranty) and it has died. Will not boot, local computer repair place says likely motherboard issue. It is outrageous to have a failure like this after 14 months. Since it is out of warranty am I just out of luck?

This is the best explanation of @joinmastodon that I've heard:
It's like if twitter had multiple providers like email. Sign up anywhere, talk to everyone. No lock in to any specific server, you can move servers without leaving your friends. It gives users the power to leave abusive server operators without their friend network being hostage.

Went down a rabbit hole today trying to figure out how to convert spectra to perceived color. Found this very nice page that even includes code: scipython.com/blog/convertin… Works well for black bodies but unsurprisingly doesn't do well on darker spectra (e.g. mineral reflectance).

I own multiple items of clothing with Mars rovers on them, and am currently wearing two of them at the same time.
Tell me you're a Planetary Scientist without telling me you're a #PlanetaryScientist... we'll go first! Does anyone else decorate their space with moons, planets, and stars? 🌟🌛🪐

The scenery curiosity is driving through never gets old. We knew it would be amazing back when we were doing the initial mapping from orbit, but still: wow.
It's official: @MarsCuriosity has reached the sulfate-bearing unit. What secrets do these salty rocks contain about the transformation of Mars from watery and habitable to dry and desolate...? mars.nasa.gov/news/9281/curi…

Dust and minerals are only the beginning. This instrument (EMIT) is basically a high resolution camera that is ALSO a tricorder. And it's looking down from the ISS, taking data all the time. We are going to learn so much about our changing world it gives me goosebumps!
