Thai Cave Rescue Veterans Close In on 7 Trapped in Flooded Laos Cave Thai rescue teams involved in the 2018 Tham Luang cave mission are closing in on seven villagers trapped inside a flooded cave in Laos’ Xaisomboun province, with rescuers saying they are now believed to be less than 20-30 meters from the group. The villagers entered the cave on May 19 searching for gold before heavy rain triggered flash floods that sealed the entrance. One member escaped and alerted authorities, but there has still been no direct contact with the remaining seven. Thai and Lao rescue teams have been pumping water out of the cave around the clock while clearing mud, sand and gravel blocking narrow passages. Reuters reported rescuers advanced about 15 meters deeper into the cave within a single day, while AP said teams have now penetrated roughly 100 meters into the flooded system. Rescuers are also exploring air shafts above the cave as possible alternative access routes. The operation now involves around 100 personnel from Laos and Thailand, including soldiers, divers, medics and civilian volunteers. Videos from inside the cave show rescuers crawling through muddy passages as narrow as 50-60 centimeters while wading through chest-high floodwater. Thai rescuer Kengkaj Bangkaowong said teams believe success is “not far away,” adding that water is being pumped out “day and night.” The rescue effort also includes Finnish cave diver Mikko Paasi and Thai diver Norrased “Ben” Palasing, both veterans of the internationally watched 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue in northern Thailand.
