It is easier to be (rightly) outraged by poorer Nigerians begging for money from terrorists and kidnappers online, than it is to be outraged by nicely dressed middle class Nigerians, professionals, journalists, writers, and others who routinely take money from politicians who have open and verifiable records of being rapists, murderers, and thieves whose corruption directly leads to more deaths than any bandit could manage to kill. At least these poor(er) people online are just beggars. The well dressed ones don’t just take the money of murderous politicians who terrorise millions, they also actively whitewash and sell them as fit for public office. Like I wrote in an article here a while ago, a Nigerian will tweet about how much of a disgrace and eyesore Nigerians begging at the airport and on the streets is, while on their way to do executive begging in offices and homes. In the end, the only real crime in Nigeria is poverty. Whatever crime you choose to do, just try to have money and success and you will be fine. Because if you are poor even the people you try to be good to will spit on you because you represent everything they hate and fear — that peculiarly dehumanising Nigerian poverty.

The problem gentlemen is you think "rapist" means scary man in a hoodie lurking in an alleyway at 3am. Of course you'd block that guy. But it's the boyfriend you really loved who was angry that you hadn't wanted sex for two days and pinned you for the bed and then felt really bad about it. It's the really sweet guy backstage who you loved working with for the whole production who knew you only wanted to be friends and then got you drunk at the after party and raped you in a dressing room. It's the husband who whined and pleaded for sex long after you've said no for hours and refused to take no for an answer until you gave in every night for four years until you realised what it was. It's the childhood friend who knows your parents and is your brother's best mate who suddenly attacked you when you were 17 and then told you he'd be thrown out of Oxford if you said anything. It's the kind colleague who offered to drive you home from that conference when there was a train strike and then forced his hands into your pants in a lay-by and then threatened to leave you there at 3am if you didn't stop being a cockteasing bitch. We're not dumb. We see the constant attempts to make anything short of stranger with a knife made up, regret, our fault really, a matter of the woman not being clear. We know why you keep trying to make this 'not rape'. Because if coercion, marital rape, pressure, manipulation and exploitation count, then the comforting fantasy that rape is only ever a stranger with a knife falls apart.

A rape case was dropped 13 days before trial. Years later, an independent review found it should have gone ahead. But by then, it was too late. Here's why that matters. A woman reported a rape. Three and a half years later, she was preparing for trial. Then the CPS dropped the case. The reason? A sexsomnia defence. The case would never be heard by a jury. Most people thought that was the end. It wasn't. She requested a Victim's Right to Review. An independent Chief Crown Prosecutor reviewed the decision. The conclusion was extraordinary. The case should never have been dropped. In fact, the review found it was more likely than not that a jury would have convicted. But there was a devastating problem. The CPS had already offered no evidence in court. Double jeopardy meant the case could never be reopened. The decision was found to be wrong. The outcome could not be changed. So she sued the CPS. The CPS apologised. They paid damages. They changed policy. And today, there is a pilot scheme that gives victims an option for a review before rape cases are dropped. That woman was me. My case can't be put back before a jury. But others shouldn't have to hear that a case should have gone to trial only after it's too late to do anything about it. That's why I'm campaigning for victims to have a review before cases are dropped. And for the current pilot to become permanent. Not after. When it's too late. #RightToBeReviewed #VictimsRights #JusticeMatters

The Atlantic slave trade is not singled out because other slavery didn't exist. It is singled out because it built the world we currently live in. The financial institutions. The insurance markets. The shipping routes. The racial categories. The colonial borders. The wealth distribution between continents that still defines the global economy today. The Atlantic slave trade is not studied with particular intensity because historians are biased. It is studied with particular intensity because its consequences are not historical. They are present. You don't single it out to assign ancient blame. You examine it to understand current reality. The reason your argument wants to dissolve that specificity into universal human wickedness is precisely because universal human wickedness requires nothing from anyone today. Specific, traceable, present consequences do.
Replying to @nxt888
The logical destination of my point is that slavery was a world wide system at the time acceptable to most, and most participated in it. Singling one part of that trade out to be to blame makes no sense logically or morally.

Jo Shaw died yesterday after her ex Ryan Kelly forced his way into her Bristol house & killed her. She had made repeated domestic abuse reports to Avon & Somerset Police, yet he was still roaming free. Women are told to report violence. Jo did.
Replying to @ASPolice
We can confirm a mandatory referral will be made by our Professional Standards Department to the IOPC. This is on the grounds of the deaths occurring following previous police contact, specifically other domestic incidents being reported to us prior to Sunday.

“What rights do men have that women don't?” I mean... if you really want to play dumb, go ahead. But the reason we even HAVE this conversation is because only 14 out of 195 countries give women full legal equality. And yes, I can literally name all of them, because the list is that short: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Germany, and the Netherlands. I'll wait till reality catches up to you.
