Primarily study Arctic tundra and boreal forest predator-prey dynamics. PhD @umanitoba. MSc @UMNDuluth. Collaborator @VoyaWolfProject. (No longer active here).
The 2nd chapter from my dissertation is out now in @Oikos_Journal! We describe how predators have an irreplaceable role in ecosystems by creating “ecological hotspots” – localized areas that contribute to landscape heterogeneity ecosystem function. A 🧵

ALT Locations of randomly sampled aspen stands in northern Yellowstone National Park. The northern Yellowstone elk winter range is the maximum distribution of the northern Yellowstone elk population during winter when elk often browse young aspen
And if you're wondering if /how herbivory affects the ecological structure of savannas, here's a view from space of one of the UHURU experiment blocks...nothing else like it for several kms in the surrounding area:
Hey folks, in an (unexpected) turn of events, I find myself filling in as instructor for an introductory/undergraduate level population ecology course. I'd love to hear about your favorite resources for courses like this!
🚨 Excited to share my first (open access) article published in #JAE! 🚨
We used 14 years of #CMR data to reveal cumulative costs of reproduction in female eastern grey kangaroos, which highlights the need for long-term ecological research.

A global assessment of large terrestrial carnivore kill rates. doi.org/10.1111/brv.13143
Super excited to share the first published chapter of my PhD - A systematic literature review & synthesis of large carnivore kill rates, i.e. rate at which carnivores kill prey. 1/n
I defended my PhD this past Friday after a long 5 yrs of work on Arctic tundra food web dynamics! It absolutely could not have happened without an incredible support system around me, especially my advisor, Jim Roth, & my family.
Thanks to all who helped and attended my defense!
I’m excited to announce that I’ve started as an Assistant Professor at Lakehead University! I’m looking for two PhD students to join my new lab. If you are interested in investigating how disturbance affects caribou in Northern Ontario, please apply! And please spread the word!
We captured some really neat footage of lynx this past year on our cameras but this is definitely the coolest. In fact, might be the best video of a lynx we have ever captured, not least because the lynx decided sit right in front of the camera...
Thanks to the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund for their continued support of the project, which allows us to capture, document, and share neat footage of the wildlife in northern Minnesota!
I have my PhD defense this Friday! The end is in sight, and it's open to the public! Though, note the time is 1pm (C/T) in room 304 Bio Sci Bldg., not 10pm in room 204...
It's about time that a wolf pack got named after the late, great Warren Zevon! Certainly one of the perks of having a long-term project is being able to add a little fun and flair into the mix!
“Little old beaver got mutilated late last night/werewolves of London again”-Warren Zevon
We were pouring over winter trail camera footage yesterday and found this footage of the recently-formed Zevon Pack with the remains of a freshly-killed beaver.
Important new paper from @BrennaJCassidy et al. shows that hunting outside the northern boundary of Yellowstone National Park in Montana adds to, rather than replaces, other sources of mortality for wolves primarily living in Yellowstone NP & Wyoming. besjournals.onlinelibrary.wi…
My first paper from my Master’s work in the Spatial Wildlife Ecology Lab at @SIUC is out! We explored bobcat and coyote spatial responses along a gradient of human land modification. And it’s open access! doi.org/10.1186/s40462-024-0…
🚨🚨🚨 Thrilled to announce my 1st publication! I'm proud to have had the opportunity of collaborating with @festa_bianchet and my PI Fanie Pelletier on this! Look out Cloutier et al. 2024 in @ESAEcology to learn more about indirect effects of predation: esajournals.onlinelibrary.wi…
The last 2 chapters of my dissertation are now out as preprints! Take a gander if you're interested in learning more about predator-prey dynamics between Arctic foxes and geese! Plus special appearances from polar bears, seals, and lemmings! 🦊🪿🐻❄️🦭🐁
In the second study, we assess how Arctic fox use of marine subsidies – largely seal carrion leftover from polar bear kills! – indirectly affects goose reproduction, thereby linking Arctic tundra and sea ice food webs via the subsidization of Arctic foxes. doi.org/10.32942/X27P6Z
