We’re campaigning to pass Canada’s student press protection law in BC — because student journalists are real journalists. From @jjjesskim & @spencerizen.
The Student Press Freedom Act (“SPFA”) is Canada’s first student journalism protection legislation.
H/S students have rights to freedom of expression and of the press.
Its time to secure those rights with the SPFA.

We're calling on @Queens_AMS to immediately rescind a motion that could impinge on the future editorial freedom of @queensjournal.
Student journalism is real journalism. Any efforts to interfere in journalistic activities is completely intolerable. 🎤

Our courts have been clear; the Charter applies & school officials must faithfully heed its requirements. The censorship of Lexis De Meyer's speech by Robert Bateman Secondary School is a gross, and insensitive, violation of her right to free expression. ow.ly/LxYO50Ss20u

Incidents like this are far too common in schools in B.C. and across Canada. Censoring students’ rights to freedom of expression like this is terrible, and completely unsurprising.

The Student Press Freedom Act would not completely eliminate the threats to students’ rights, as in this case — nor is it indented to. But, its passage would mark the beginning of a shift in the law and policy of education in B.C. in favour of protecting civil liberties.
We're also deeply alarmed by this trend of police in Canada arresting journalists - particularly during coverage of protests and encampment convictions. We need to draw a line. This is NOT okay. t.ly/COOo8#pressfreedom#journalismmatters#cdnmedia

Democratic governments must take immediate action to protect a #FreePress and guarantee the safety of journalists, especially when they are covering elections. If they don’t, the erosion of freedoms will not stop at freedom of the press.

Happy #StudentPressFreedomDay!
Today and every day we recall that student journalists are real journalists, and their rights must be protected.
In BC, that work means passing the Student Press Freedom Act to restore students’ civil liberties to seek and report truth.
