These species come from different continents, taxa, and vectors of introduction. Their most common shared impacts are threats to/competition with native species, altering predator/prey dynamics, and costly damage to human recreation/aesthetics/economic activities. #GreatLakesSci

"Western Lake Erie harmful algal blooms" usually means Microcystis, microcystins. But work by @ColleenYancey shows that diverse cyano species & strains likely produce a wide variety of compounds including known toxins and taste & odor compounds. See these papers 👇
