Midyear Climate Summit kicks off today in Bonn, Germany Today is the first day of #SB64 in Bonn, Germany, and for the next two weeks, climate negotiators from around the world will be poring over various issues to define the agenda for #COP31 in Turkey in November. We revisit 5 key events that defined last year’s SB62: ✅Agenda impasse: For more than two days, the Parties failed to adopt the agenda of the conference, after some developing countries added ‘‘contentious’’ items to the agenda ✅GGA deadlock: Parties clashed over the #meansofimplementation, struggled to agree on the exact number, structure of indicators ✅Just Transition Progress: The Belem Action Mechanism (BAM) was proposed, but negotiators failed to reach a definitive arrangement ✅The Finance quicksand: A lack of formal agenda items on #climatefinance bred frustration. Leaders from around the world are convening in Samarkand, Uzbekistan for the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Assembly—uniting 186 countries and diverse voices to accelerate global environmental action and solutions. The GEF Assembly meets once every 4 years remains the world’s largest multilateral environmental fund addressing the global environment in an integrated manner. At the Global Environment Facility Assembly 2026 currently underway in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, the Secretary General to the Convention on Wetlands, Dr Musonda Mumba, delivered the keynote address at the Birds & Banks – Scaling Finance for Global Flyways event, that was focused on scaling up finance and conservation action for global flyways. She engaged with and thanked the Asian Development Bank (ADB)@ADB_HQ the @WorldBankGroup the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and BirdLife International @BirdLife_News for their leadership. Wetlands and migratory waterbirds are at the heart of the Convention’s mandate. The Secretary General stated that the Secretariat is encouraged to see the flyway model expanding globally - from East Asian-Australasian Flyway, to Americas and the African–Eurasian Flyway. 🌿 Flyway initiatives directly support the COP15 commitments on migratory waterbird conservation as well as the Convention’s Strategic Plan target to reverse the loss of wetland-dependent species 💧 Beyond conservation, flyways offer investable solutions—delivering ecosystem resilience, biodiversity gains, and sustainable livelihoods.
