Members of Parliament have thrown their weight behind Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 (CAB3), firmly rejecting claims that the proposed parliamentary election of the President would undermine the democratic rights of citizens. Legislators emphasized that Zimbabweans would continue to exercise their constitutional right to vote through the election of Members of Parliament, who would then elect the President as representatives of the people.
MPs further noted that the Bill restores a system that existed in Zimbabwe before 1987 and aligns the country with governance models successfully practiced in several SADC nations, including South Africa and Botswana. They added that the proposed framework is consistent with constitutional arrangements in 34 of the 56 Commonwealth countries, arguing that CAB3 reflects internationally recognized democratic norms and strengthens institutional governance....πβ
