Since the age of 17, Grace has been on a mission to raise awareness and support the Huntington's Disease Association. In her own personal experience, she found it was more common than not that people were unfamiliar with Huntington's disease, having never heard of it before!

Half term this year - last year, this is the time when we are meant to be getting that extra water work in in a nice relaxed time - not running round the gym- starting to struggle to keep myself motivated let alone them

šŸ† Athletics star Yemi Mary John crowned winner of SportsAid's One-to-Watch Award 2023 šŸ† @NickHopeTV šŸŽ„ Track sensation Yemi Mary John, 20, from Woodford in Essex, has been named as the winner of SportsAid’s prestigious One-to-Watch Award for 2023! Yemi Mary received the annual Award, supported by Royal Bank of Canada, after an outstanding year which saw her claim gold in the 400m at the European Athletics U23 Championships and two senior relay medals at the World Athletics Championships. Yemi Mary, who also featured in the top 10 last year having won gold at the World Athletics U20s Championships in 2022, was presented with the Award by 400 metres legend Christine Ohuruogu MBE at Lee Valley Athletics Centre on Monday (18 December). She edged out para cyclist Archie Atkinson, 19, and BMX rider Freia Challis, 15, as they finished in second and third positions respectively. ā€œIt's a really good feeling and it's great to have had this season's achievements recognised!ā€ said Yemi Mary shortly after being presented with the Award. ā€œThey caught me off-guard with my Award which was a lovely surprise. Christine has done amazing things, not only in the sport as a whole but in the 400 specifically, so just to have her recognise me and be able to be in a room with such great and successful people is exciting. I appreciated her being there for it. ā€œI feel like it sets me up for a great trajectory of success and hopefully I will follow in the footsteps of those before [who have won the One-to-Watch Award]. I feel like I'm already on the radar especially because of my first senior season, not only just competing but coming away with medals. The targets I had for the season were hit in the senior field and it solidified my position there and hopefully I can now go further next year.ā€ Yemi Mary, who dabbled in many sports from gymnastics to MMA when growing up, only started properly competing on the track in 2019. The University of Southern California student has been supported by SportsAid for the last two years and is now determined to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games having made such an impression on the world stage at senior level in 2023. šŸ† SportsAid's One-to-Watch Award shortlist: Amelie Tsang šŸ† Amelie Tsang has already written her name into British fencing’s history books and has no plans to stop here. The 17-year-old foil athlete can pinpoint the exact month she fell in love with her sport, back in September 2015, when her mum decided to take her and her older sister to an after-school club. Three weeks later, the Bromley ace took bronze in her first competition, and she has barely looked back since, becoming the first-ever British woman to be crowned fencing world champion in any category earlier this year. Following a trailblazing season, Amelie has now been shortlisted in the top 10 for SportsAid’s prestigious One-to-Watch Award. The annual Award, launched in 2006, recognises Britain’s brightest young sporting prospects and has previously been won by Olympic champions Tom Daley and Alex Yee and Paralympic gold medallist Hollie Arnold. The top 10 athletes have been selected from around 1,000 rising stars, supported by SportsAid, across more than 60 different sports in 2023. "I was really excited when I got the email to say I'd been nominated as I didn't expect it," said Amelie. "It's really nice to know that what you're achieving and what you've been doing is being recognised by such a big charity like SportsAid. It is good to know all the hours I'm putting in are not going unnoticed. It is a great stepping stone to carry on and do better." The highlight of Amelie’s year came in Bulgaria in April as she stormed to the women’s foil title at the World Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships. Aged just 16 at the time, the ZFW Fencing Club star went into the competition ranked eighth in a field of 83 but emerged victorious after beating Italy's Greta Collini 15-11 in the final. Alongside breaking onto the senior circuit in style, Amelie has had a 2023 to remember. šŸ† SportsAid's One-to-Watch Award shortlist: Maddie Down šŸ† Birmingham's Maddie Down started 2023 with a broken back and ended it as a two-time Commonwealth Youth Games champion. The 16-year-old para athletics star stormed to gold in the women's T38 100m and long jump at Trinbago 2023 less than six months after getting a L5 pars stress fracture in her lower spine. Maddie's golden year in track and field has now led to being shortlisted in the top 10 for SportsAid’s prestigious One-to-Watch Award. "I've been on the UK Futures programme for a year now and it's helped me so much, so it's an honour to be nominated," said Maddie. "The work SportsAid do to help me compete all around the world is incredible and to now follow in the footsteps of Tom Daley and Hollie Arnold with this nomination is pretty exciting. "The stress fracture in my back was probably the biggest challenge I've ever had to face in sport. I landed funny in the sandpit, and I couldn’t jump for three months. I had been able to win two golds at the event in Dubai [Sharjah International Open Athletics Meeting] before that, but that period was tough." Maddie's return came during the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago this summer, when she claimed long jump victory with a jump of 4.70m. The event marked the first time para events had been included in the Games and Maddie hopes her exploits can encourage other disabled youngsters to pursue their sporting dreams. šŸ† SportsAid's One-to-Watch Award shortlist: Freia Challis šŸ† BMX star Freia Challis didn’t have to look far for inspiration to chase her Olympic dream. The 15-year-old started racing at Braintree BMX Club, the home of Olympic and world champion Beth Shriever. The pair share a sunny demeanour, thick Essex accents and incredible talent on a bike with Freia emulating Shriever and scooping age-group world and European titles. Freia has now been shortlisted in the top 10 for SportsAid’s prestigious One-to-Watch Award – an achievement Shriever also experienced back in 2017 where she was eventually crowned runner-up. The annual Award, launched in 2006, recognises Britain’s brightest young sporting prospects and has previously been won by Olympic champions Tom Daley and Alex Yee and Paralympic gold medallist Hollie Arnold. The top 10 athletes have been selected from around 1,000 rising stars, supported by SportsAid, across more than 60 different sports in 2023. ā€œI trained with Beth from quite a young age,ā€ said Freia. ā€œShe took the time to talk to me, to teach me things and help me with certain skills on the track. Seeing her process leading up to the Olympics, she had injuries and setbacks and even when things go wrong, she always comes out stronger from the situation. ā€œShe had an injury right before the Olympics and she went there not expecting anything, and she came out as Olympic champion, that was just special to see. It’s amazing to have her to look up to as a young GB rider.ā€ You can read the full interview with Freia here ā–¶ļø sportsaid.org.uk/athletes/at… #SportsAidO2W #SupportTheNext #SportsAid #Olympics #Paralympics #sport #athletes #mentoring #wellbeing #nextgeneration #nextgen #future #talent #charity #fundraising #cycling #BMX

šŸ† SportsAid's One-to-Watch Award shortlist: Greta Roeser šŸ† Canoeing prodigy Greta Roeser has credited an unstoppable team mentality as the key behind her ā€˜amazing’ 2023. The Guildford star, 18, medalled at every major international she competed at in 2023, with her haul including K1 5,000m gold at the Junior World Championships. Greta is coached by her dad Duncan, a key steerer of the 'Team Greta' motto and a former paddler himself, and the partnership worked wonders over a year which also included a European canoe marathon title and four national titles. "I'm beyond amazed by my season," she said. "My coach is my dad and it's been really good to have that connection on the water. It's very much Team Greta in that sense. He actually paddled when he was younger, but I didn't know that until I joined my club, and someone mentioned it. "We saw the opportunity to get better this season and thought that if we got some more training sessions in and even maybe some early mornings then we could build. At the sprint worlds, I was a bit disappointed to finish eighth in the 1,000m, but I think it helped me relax a little bit before the 5k the next day. I went into that race wanting to give it my best go and ended up winning which was amazing. "A week later, I had the marathon Europeans. I was in such a surreal state as I won gold there as well."
