Ossendorf et at. 2026, Data from the Bale Mountains, Ethiopia. doi.org/10.1007/s10980-026-0… The authors write that they don't use the terms microlithic, geometrical microlith or LSA. Based on results by researchers from the last years. Part of the study is use-wear anslysis. 1/3

Use-wear identifies two scenarios. Projectiles and knives (cutting). Calling all backed tools just backed tools obscures this two different functions and tools. 2/3

Authors themself discuss the oblique hafting of crescents. Different morphology different function ->crescents ->geometrical microlith. Concluding that the terminology is useless, yet presenting data that would support a more differentiated terminology. 3/3

Thanks for that review. I think it's a good thing to include experts in all relevant fields as co-authors. There are many archaeologists available and some with solid knowledge of lithic technology. We are nice. :)
A new preprint from the geneticist David Reich focuses on the interactions of Neanderthal and African ancestral humans 250,000 years ago. Many parts I wholly agree with, but the key idea about Levallois technology is out of step with today's data. johnhawks.net/p/did-levalloi…

All das ist nur mit ausreichend Finanzierung in Zukunft möglich. Einsparungen an Forschungsstellen gefährden solche tollen Resultate.
