Mires and bogs in the New Forest play a critical role. Acting like sponges they hold much-needed water on the land, supporting wildlife and plants, and helping to prevent flooding for communities further downstream. @NaturalEngland @NFVerderers @ForestryEngland @RealNewForest

It's #WorldWetlandsDay on Sunday. Did you know that heathland soils can store as much or more carbon as woodlands? The New Forest has 75% of ALL the boggy and wet heathlands still remaining in North Western Europe. @NewForestNPA @NFVerderers @ForestryEngland 📹 @BigWaveTV

Most lowland heath has been lost in the past 200 years. It is one of the rarest and most valuable habitats on earth, maintained by grazing. We are so fortunate with the survival of the #NewForest - the best heathland in Western Europe #RealNewForest
Sometimes we have to fell trees in the Forest. It can look destructive however we do it to protect the internationally important and declining heathland and open habitats we care for. Find out more here: bit.ly/2Gp2mnB

Have you seen any in your neighbourhood? If so please help and log your sighting #GreatStagHunt
Have you been lucky enough to spot a #StagBeetle yet? They have a very short life span as an adult, only a few weeks in fact! If you do see one, please help us build a picture of the population and log your sighting on our website for the #GreatStagHunt! ptes.org/get-involved/survey…

The seepage mires on our New Forest commons contain an internationally important mix of specialist plants, including carnivorous Sundews. The droplets of 'dew' lure insects in for a drink, but it is in fact glue which sticks the insect & it is slowly absorbed by the plant.

Another #grazed #common providing fantastic biodiversity. @deliverymodel @4CommonLand
Some sites are worth travelling a long way to visit and Rodborough Common in Gloucestershire is one of them. I have seen 18 species of butterfly there, also plenty of moths and wildflowers. Just updated photo gallery page. britishnatureguide.com/glouc…

Disposable bbqs can only be used at a few sites in the #NewForest - for info please see forestryengland.uk/barbecues… 🍔🌭
Summer is in full flow at the moment with lots of warm weather & sunshine to enjoy! Please be careful though if using disposable BBQ’s as it doesn’t take long to start a grass or forest fire in these very dry conditions! ☀️🔥🧯🚒 #TeamHants #CookSafe #NewForest
