â ď¸Scam Alert: Fake Detentions Payment Calls Increasing
The Douglas County Sheriffâs Office is seeing an increase in scam calls reported through our Detentions Lobby. Callers are posing as members of our office and demanding payment for things like a pre-trial ankle monitor or a booking/bond fee.
In many cases, victims are told to send money immediately using apps such as CashApp, Apple Pay, or Venmo. Unfortunately, some individuals have already made payments before contacting us to verify the call.
We want to be very clear: The Douglas County Sheriffâs Office will never call you to demand payment over the phone. We will not ask for money through gift cards, prepaid debit cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or payment apps.
Scammers rely on fear and urgency to pressure people into acting quickly. These calls may even appear legitimate, as caller ID information can be spoofed to display our name or phone number.
If you receive one of these calls:
Hang up immediately.
Do not provide any personal or financial information.
Do not send money.
