Today, we proudly welcome 11 new deputies to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office family following their graduation from the Highlands Ranch Law Enforcement Training Academy. These graduates have completed 21 weeks of rigorous training and are now preparing to serve our community in both Detentions and Patrol. Their commitment, perseverance, and dedication have brought them to this important milestone, and we are excited to see the positive impact they will make in Douglas County. During the graduation ceremony, Sheriff Darren Weekly reminded the class of the responsibility that comes with the badge: “Each of you here stands ready to embark on a path that you choose to walk. This path demands courage, integrity, and a steadfast dedication to serve and protect your community.” Please join us in congratulating Class 22 and wishing these new deputies success as they begin their careers serving the residents of Douglas County. We also extend our congratulations to the graduates joining the Parker Police Department, Castle Rock Police Department, and South Metro Fire Rescue SWAT Medics following their successful completion of the academy.

We invite you to consider volunteering with our Victim Assistance Unit. Our Advocates respond to major crimes and unexpected deaths to help victims and their family members begin to pick up the pieces by providing emotional support, information, and resources/referrals. Advocates are also liaisons between the victim and the Sheriff’s Office for what can be a new and stressful journey. Volunteer Advocates work alongside staff who are just as passionate about supporting victims and their families. This is what one of our volunteers had to say: “Being a Victim Advocate for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office allows me the opportunity to give back to my community while serving the people who live here. I always feel it is an honor and a privilege to be in a family’s presence during these initial moments of disbelief, fear, and helplessness. It always seems there is a moment when things become calm, and you sense everything will be OK with time. Thanks to our prosecutors & law partners, another sexual predator is being held accountable. Former Dougco teacher David Feil was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to sexual exploitation of a child involving multiple elementary school students. #Justice

There are moments that change a community forever, and people whose courage we carry with us long after they’re gone. Today marks seven years since the tragic events at STEM School Highlands Ranch. We remember Kendrick Castillo and the selfless bravery he showed in protecting others. It was a solemn and moving ceremony as we gathered to pay our respects to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
