My favourite novel. Graham Greene once said that reading it was like watching a cathedral being built stone by stone.
I'm so glad I didn't read The Good Soldier before writing Justine or I might never have finished her! This novel is an eye-opener with its brilliant organization and gathering momentum; it's fit to be put beside the best of our time. — Lawrence Durrell

I had no idea until reading this piece by @mickbrownwriter about the truth regarding Calos Casteneda. I've never read him but he sort of hovered in the back of my mind as someone I should. The sham shaman: the fantastic lies of Carlos Castaneda spectator.com/article/the-sh…

I don’t quite believe that. My admiration for her work is limitless, I know her life was unbearably challenging, but still she knew her talent. She could never have survived without being a writer.

I'm really enjoying Stalin's Apostles by @Tonisenior. She has a great eye for the deflating detail: Anthony Blunt was a member of Cambridge Uni's Apostles Club, filled with "arcane rules and slang" such as their traditional meal of sardines on toast being called "whales".

One of my favourite phrases: when a man enters a pub, meets his mate as arranged and his mate is already halfway through a pint, the man asks: “You want another?” His mate will ALWAYS look shrewdly at his drink then say, “Oh, go on then.”

“An artist does not live a personal life as we do...Underneath all his preoccupations...there is, quite simply, a man tortured beyond endurance by the lack of tenderness in the world.” Clea writing to the narrator about the writer Pursewarden in Lawrence Durrell's Justine.

Born on this day in 1859, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's many works include "The Lost World." He got there decades ahead of others writers, not to mention the film makers who came later. I have always loved this cover from the 1977 Pan imprint. #OTD #OnThisDay #ArthurConanDoyle

"These days young people are either making videos about how much they love books, or masturbating over werewolves." @Docstockk is too good.

Book clubs are for phoneys, by Kathleen Stock (@Docstockk) Literary criticism requires attention to chapters, paragraphs, sentences, and not just the whole. It means forgetting about how a book makes you feel, or what inspiring message it conveys, and getting dispassionately deep into the mechanics. It means stopping treating the book as a cool experience like a funfair ride or a sunset, and thinking of it as a deliberate creation of a particular mind instead. Read more below ⬇️ buff.ly/8oHFHir
