Today I visited St Denys Church at Evington to look at the story concerning the flagpole and to see if it was the original one from the Shady Lane camp, home of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment. I was lucky to find the church open and inside were some memorials and flags/stars & stripes. Back on Sunday August 13th 1944, there was a church service at St Denys when members of the 504th attended. It was sponsored by the HQ Coy, 1st Bn, with Company Commander Captain Anderson and Ushers Pfc Harry Roberts and Pvt Harry Dunaway. At this service, the Commanding Officer of the 504th PIR, Colonel Reuben K Tucker presented the church with the American Flag, being received by the Reverend A Richardson, vicar of St Denys. Col Tucker said "the flag was a token of appreciation to the people of Evington, who received opur boys into your church and community". He wanted the flag to always remain in the church and looked forward to revisiting Evington in days of peace. He went on to say "It has been in the front of the division through he campaigns of Africa, Italy and Sicily" and he added "Old Glory" has an honoured position today at St Denys'. Sadly, the original stars & stripes that was presented in 1944 just prior to the 504th leaving for Operation MARKET GARDEN is in such a poor state that it is not safe to display anymore, but a couple of newer flags have been presented over the years since. The American troops also donated over £200 towards the building of a vestry for the Church, but sadly this had to be demolished a few years ago due to being unsafe and replaced by a new building.
