The consequences of the establishment parties bucking public opinion to enforce war driven austerity will be to increase the alienation of voters from the political process and raise the danger of far right nationalists filling the political vacuum stopwar.org.uk/article/publi…

The likes of Lisa Nandy doing the media rounds justifying choosing guns over butter do so as public opinion is increasingly hostile to that option. Ipsos polling last week found 50% oppose increases in arms spending if it means increased taxes and 45% oppose arms increases if it means less spending on public services

Scale of sentences on the 4 young people who took direct action against the arms supplier to Israel is truly shocking. To impose years of imprisonment for protesting to save lives in Gaza is unjust, especially sentencing on terrorist grounds they were never convicted of by a jury

Healey wanted to increase defence spending by £28bn/year from £61bn to approx £89bn. That's an increase of 40%! It was an ABSURD ask - UK would be the fourth largest military spender in the world after US, China and Russia. Vast amounts of that would be siphoned off by rapacious, price-gouging contractors in the most corrupt industry in the world. And none of it would help - in fact, it would mostly worsen - the biggest threat to global security, which is climate change. The right wing press will try and present Healey's ask as eminently reasonable, but it was a ludicrous cash grab at the same time that were cutting overseas aid, climate change mitigation and welfare spending.

Al Carns saying (imo rightly) "platforms that cost billions can be defeated by systems that cost thousands", so why is he arguing for big increases in defence spending? Was he eg arguing for cancelling overpriced Tempest jets for cheap Drone capability?

In 2024 Wes Streeting said that South Africa's ICJ case was a "distraction."
The concerns I raised about Gaza - including distressing eyewitness accounts from UK medics - were a result of moral urgency, not 'mid life crisis'. It felt like hitting a brick wall at the time - now I know how casually those concerns were dismissed. theguardian.com/politics/202…

I’m just as afraid of the NHS being a hate factory as I was of the National Trust being a Trojan horse of Woke, or the RNLI being treasonous migrant lovers, or the Proms banning Rule Britannia to pander to The Blacks. These things are all the same thing. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cn0p…

A significant slice of Centrist Labour would rather lose to Reform than see even the 'Soft Left' win Labour Leadership
Some Labour MPs who oppose replacing Keir Starmer are refusing to campaign for Andy Burnham in Makerfield "People feel like they are being asked to take part in an act of self-harm and so aren’t happy about campaigning," one told PolHome Party chair Anna Turley has asked all Labour MPs to canvass in the by-election twice during the campaign, plus polling day on 18 June However, multiple Starmer loyalists plan to defy that instruction, with some saying they will stay away altogether, @harriet_symonds reports exclusively politicshome.com/news/articl…

(1)Cenk shouldn't be banned for criticising US Israel policy, but he's wrong that "Israel controls the US govt through donations to Congress" : The US backs Israel for "imperial" reasons , to have a loyal , aggressive military ally in the Middle East. Donations are secondary..
The British government is saying they're banning me because I am "a serious risk to the public order" due to my criticism of Israel. They say that my charge that Israel controls the American government through donations to 94% of Congress, while factual, is antisemitic nonetheless. Don't know if facts will soon be banned in Britain. I didn't get banned for criticizing the UK, but for criticizing Israel. They broke the irony record by saying it was because I said Israel might control other governments. I wonder if they're going to ban themselves. Think about it - if I had said that the Israeli government controls the British government so thoroughly that they'll ban someone from coming to the UK just for criticizing Israel, they would have said that was an antisemitic statement. This is absolutely Kafkaesque.

(2) its like UK backing for apartheid South Africa - the SA regime spent money/time cultivating UK politicians ( on attacking UK critics of Apartheid). It mattered. But the UK truly supported the Apartheid regime as a loyal, aggressive enemy of anti-imperialist African nations

Much like the crushing of student protests under Biden, the Starmer government is creating the mechanisms, precedent and, worst of all, legitimacy for the authoritarian Reform government they keep warning us about. They're paving the way.
I was supposed to chair the @hasanthehun discussion at SXSW this week, who's been banned from entering the UK by Shabana Mahmood. First of all, @sxsw must facilitate a way for Hasan and Cenk to contribute remotely, as a bare minimum refusal to comply with government censorship.
