The U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) is one of the coolest cultural things we do at State. For modest amounts, we help to excavate, preserve, and restore priceless historic buildings, archeological sites, religious archives, and other world heritage. Today I toured Patan Durbar Square, a complex of 16-17C palace and temple structures damaged by a 2015 earthquake. AFCP stepped in to support repairs, which were led by the gracious and expert Dr. Rohit Ranjitkar. Lalitpur Mayor Chiri Babu Maharjan welcomed me and joined us on our tour. Restorations on many of these buildings were marginal — the teak timber held up well over centuries of tectonic events. Where new carvings were needed, Dr. Ranjitkar tracked down descendants of the original artisans who chiseled the fixtures, providing them training where needed so they could contribute replacement pieces.
