It’s not Xbox so it’s fine. Nothing to see here!
Sony is also reportedly planning to close and lay off staff at four studios: Bend, Media Molecule, Haven, and Bungie. All are candidates for complete closure or staff layoffs, according to a report by a French journalist.

Awful look agreed
Reputationally, it's going to be hard for Xbox to come back from this one. I think most fans expected layoffs or cancellations...but announcing Senua and then axing Ninja Theory is a bad, bad look. Fans have whiplash from going from SGF hype to Xbox Game Studios breaking up.

Polygon with the Xbox tax now. The media hate you @asha_shar @ballmatthew don’t give then an inch.
Microsoft should sell Xbox before it ruins everything polygon.com/xbox-microsoft-n

Hard PlayStation fan boys are so obvious right now.
I don't really get the Xbox plan here. Even trying to "accelerate" things, you are not going to get a new Halo or Elder Scrolls or Fallout sooner than every 4-5 years. There is still no hard and fast reason to get a console with PC and cloud available. The next actual console is going to be hugely expensive anyway barring significant changes. The most vocal Xbox fans on here cheerleading everything already have a console and Game Pass, and the ceiling for that subscription service is hard to break through, much less making up the losses from the 50% hike. I don't see the vision.

Didn't Double Fine and Ninja Theory games also release on PC and PS5? How are you guys blaming gamepass on this? I also remember the najority of people trashing Hellblade 2 and now those same people are outraged.

Replying to @JezCorden
These rumors are false. Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will stay exclusive. There are no conversations and have been no conversations to "reverse course." And as we said last week, players can continue to expect signature exclusives from us every year.

It's fanfic that Microsoft wants to "reverse course" on Xbox exclusives right now, or that it was some kind of weird PR slight of hand just for the showcase. Exclusive games is a foundation of the strategy for post memory crisis. Just how far they go with it remains to be seen... obviously. Microsoft/Satya likes to change strategy and create uncertainty a lot.

🟱 So let me get this straight Xbox - ✅ Acquired a bunch of dev teams ✅ Gave them a blank cheque ✅ Unlimited time ✅ Unlimited support ✅ Unlimited staff ✅ Complete autonomy of their projects
and when devs didn’t deliver “successful” games

Xbox is somehow to blame?

Asha told us the Xbox business was not healthy. I feel for those losing their jobs but let’s be honest, compulsion, ninja theory, even double fine are ‘nice to have’ studios as opposed to system sellers. Xbox needs big hitters and the industry is in a mess. Short term pain I hope

People need to give the new Xbox leadership a chance. Yes studio closures are terrible. Game cancellations are crap. Lord knows I was most disappointed in the Perfect Dark game being cancelled after the original N64 game being one of my all time greats. But in a volatile business as the games industry where more than ever, financials are constantly looked at and assessed and instead fan desires, people need to realise this shouldn't be surprising. Under Asha Sharma, Xbox is currently going through a mandated "business reset", which means a ruthless pivot toward immediate sustainability. The harsh reality of modern gaming is that massive tech corporations are no longer willing to endlessly subsidise all studios. When the directive from the top is to hit strict profit margins, smaller, highly creative teams like Ninja Theory, Double Fine, and Compulsion Games end up facing closure or being spun off in favour of massive, reliable money-makers like Call of Duty, Fallout and Gears of War. It is absolutely devastating for the incredibly talented developers who pour their lives into these projects, and it sucks for us as fans. But math is taking precedence over art across the entire industry. Let’s see what this new leadership can build out of this reset before we write the platform off completely.

Everyone's going to tell you gaming is dying today. They're wrong. Today is obviously rough, Real people are losing jobs and of course, that always sucks. But I've said it before, the gaming business is going through a massive shift, and we're living through it in real time. Don't get caught up in the social media doomerism. This is just the old business model adjusting. The model created before the internet, before ai, before global connectivity. It's not gaming falling apart. There are more gamers, more ways to play, more great games than ever. It's never been a better time to actually be a gamer. I know Doom is easy. Doom gets clicks. But it's also wrong. If you actually love playing games, look around. It has never been a better time to be a gamer. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Media outlets are blaming Game Pass for niche studio shutdowns and not the fact that the studios didn’t produce games people actually wanted to play. Some people have Game Pass Derangement Syndrome and blaming Game Pass is easy engagement bait.

I get it, studio closures suck. But take it easy with that ‘OMG AWARD WINNING STUDIO’ stuff. Compulsion made 3 games in 13 years. Their highest rated game is a 75/100. Hardly anyone bought these games. The moment talk of Xbox shutting down studios began, the first name that popped up from almost everyone speculating on it? Compulsion. I’m saying all this as someone who actually loved the world they build in South of Midnight. They’re creative as fuck and it sucks the greedy big boys in this industry can’t properly run their shit. But please just stop all the performative drama.

No way Xbox is getting this much heat for closing studios or moving them on from internal to independent! Don't forget, previous leadership and poor decisions has cost Xbox dearly financially! I don't remember Sony getting this much heat with the way they've handled Bungie all these years and other internal studios. It's business and very sad people may loose their jobs but the industry as a whole has been very unpredictable the last six years.

We're about to see a lot of performative posts about a studio that has released 3 okay games in 13 years. I wish the art side of this industry mattered more than the business side but that isn't the world we live in. I hope the devs quickly land on their feet. #XBOX
