The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) is pleased to announce that its new Board of Directors has been duly constituted and formally inaugurated. The inauguration ceremony was officiated this morning by the Honourable Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr. D.T. Mombeshora, marking the commencement of a new governance chapter for Zimbabwe’s foremost medicines regulatory body.
The Board was constituted by the Honourable Minister, Dr. D.T. Mombeshora, pursuant to the Medicines and Allied Substances Control Act [Cap 15:03] and Section 11 of the Public Entities Corporate Governance Act [Cap 10:31], following the endorsement of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa. All appointments are effective from 08 May 2026 to 08 May 2030.
The Board is led by Chairperson Dr. Clifford Chiura and Vice Chairperson Dr. Emily Wonesai Waniwa, and comprises members Dr. Tatenda Nyagura, Dr. Brian Paketh, Mr. Gerald Nyamutamba, Dr. Godfrey Matsika, Mr. Portifa Mwendera, and Dr. Raiva Simbi. Additional 4 more members will be added in due course.
In his acceptance remarks, Chairperson Dr. Clifford Chiura expressed the Board’s commitment to the nation, stating: “As the newly appointed Board, we are committed to providing strategic oversight, promoting good corporate governance, strengthening regulatory excellence, and supporting management in advancing the Authority’s mandate. We fully appreciate the significance of maintaining public confidence in the national medicines regulatory system.”
He further pledged, on behalf of the Board, commitment to serve with integrity, diligence, and patriotism in the interest of the people of Zimbabwe.
Officiating at the ceremony, Honourable Minister Dr. D.T. Mombeshora charged the Board with clarity and purpose: “You are not a ceremonial body. You are the statutory governance structure responsible for oversight, policy direction, and accountability of this critical regulatory agency.”
He reminded the Board that Zimbabwe has attained WHO Maturity Level 3 and challenged them to drive the Authority to WHO Maturity Level 4, positioning MCAZ as an excellent, trusted, reference regulator for the region. Immediate priorities include stopping the circulation of unregistered medicines, combating antimicrobial resistance, countering falsified medicines, and establishing a regulatory pathway for traditional medicines.
The Minister concluded with a direct charge: “You have the authority and the trust of the people of Zimbabwe. Now execute your mandate.”
