More than 100 academics have urged the University of Oxford to reinstate a lecture series that was cancelled after protests from trans activists. In the letter, published in The Times on Thursday, they wrote: “It appears that the university proctors authorised and facilitated protests inside the lecture theatre and did nothing to remove miscreants." thetimes.com/uk/education/ar…

Not surprising that replies are turned off by @unisontheunion. They have an agenda and will stick to it, even when it's pointed out that the relevant legislation is actually the Workplace Regulations 1992. But: ❌They seem to be concerned that employers are following the law, and not breaking it instead. ❌ What do they expect the EHRC to do? Produce guidance that ignores and breaches the law? ❌They appear not to be interested in any dissenting female members who welcome the fact that their rights are now (belatedly) being respected. These women are ignored or are unimportant to them.
Today, @AndreaEganGS has written to @EHRC Chair Dr Mary-Ann Stephenson challenging their statement, giving examples from our members where employers are withdrawing trans inclusive policies and using the code of practice guidance as the reason. Read: unsn.uk/4opISUk

Trans activist Darren Rigby threatened massacres at three all-girls schools across Merseyside. And he did so in the name of 'transwomen' and 'misgendering'. So why was his motivation expunged from media coverage?, asks Jo Bartosch buff.ly/an71uXt

Thanks to Claire and @SpeechUnion, South Wales Police have scrapped their "Anti-Muslim Hostility" guidance. But it should never have been issued in the first place. It's not for police officers to decide what people can and can't say about a particular religion.
🚨NEW: South Wales Police has just SCRAPPED their Islamic blasphemy law. No religion should be protected from criticism in this country. Now it's on the Government to repeal their Islamophobia definition and stop this happening again.

When I was 4, my grandma visited me in the UK and gave me a piece of advice: "When you are a guest, you must behave extra well. As a guest in the UK, you should never take advantage of them, because even the greatest tolerance has its limits." She was entirely right.

The Equality Act 2010 already provides a precise, legally binding definition of discrimination and harassment, applying to all protected characteristics. Adoption of these definitions carries grave risks for free speech, academic freedom, and equality.

We believe that QMUL should not adopt the new government definition of anti-Muslim hostility, and that it should cease using the IHRA definition of antisemitism.

It’s not the attempted beheading but your language that is the problem. That is the response of the elites to people’s real concerns. It’s gaslighting that longer works. @postgradafaf @StudentAFAF @samikshassotd @LibertarianEire @FreeSpeechIre @acadofideas @spikedonline
Jim Allister: "What will be done to stop the importation of an alien culture that thinks it's appropriate to try and behead someone?" Hilary Benn: "I'm sorry the honourable gentleman used the term 'alien culture', because what exactly is he referring to?"

No to ‘two tier’ free speech. If you believe in free speech you must defend the freedom of speech for views you detest. That doesn’t mean you must agree with the content of that speech. If you only defend free speech for views you agree with, you do not believe in free speech. @postgradafaf @StudentAFAF
Important points from @DanielJHannan - too often today, free speech rights are demanded in a tribal way. There's outrage if 'our side' are silenced, but outraged calls to sack/cancel/arrest those whose expressed opinions we deplore. Two-tier free speech not a good way to go.

Leaving cert controversy. @IrishMailSunday A State exam paper now erases women and uses a generic term “pregnant people!” “Besides taking folic acid, describe two positive lifestyle changes a pregnant person should make to protect the unborn child.” Since when did the word woman become so difficult to say or write? Is it regarded as some form of hate speech? Are women now reduced to meaningless terms and insults? These words belong to us - Mother, Grandmother, Woman, Girl, Sister, Aunt. Women will not be erased in language or in law! The Govt has not learned the lesson from the failed referendum when they tried to erase women from the constitution. The public responded with a resounding NO! So who is driving this ridiculous agenda? It’s not wanted by the public.

Great piece by @patrickxwest: 'That’s the main reason for the ubiquitous presence of these [Progress Pride aka Trans] flags every summer: people, especially businesses, are terrified of not flying them. This is unacceptable. The University of Oxford has a duty to protect free speech from militant protestors. Today I have written to the Chancellor of Oxford University @WilliamJHague urging him to investigate this matter and put in place the measures to enable these lectures to proceed peacefully. Free speech is in crisis on campus. We must do all we can to protect it.
