It's difficult to call a trade that replaces Ersson with Woll a loss. But being the team that ignores every available statistic in search of size regardless of hockey ability is never a good look.

Danny Briere on why they moved Emil Andrae: "We loved his competitive edge, but it did make our defense a little small at times." He mentioned that the backend was kind of small with Andrae, Jamie Drysdale, and Cam York #Flyers

The NHL is a copycat league. So what can teams take away from the Carolina Hurricanes' evolution from regular-season contenders to Stanley Cup champs? Here a thread on my thoughts:

Emil Andrae always played like he took half a jar of preworkout before the game whenever the Flyers called him up. Was always super involved & followed the puck like crazy. Then he would get sent down or scratched for a month.

Honestly the key take away for Toronto here imo is that for the first time in a long time they’ve bet on skill instead of size with Andrae, something they’ve need to do for a long time
I’m pretty cool with this Woll when healthy is great and he’ll only be expected to be a backup here Losing Andrae kinda sucks as a long time fan but Torts kinda screwed his development last year anyways, I Imagine this is Jiricek’s spot

Xavier Villeneuve has been compared to Lane Hutson all year. It’s easy to see why. He could very well follow in Hutson footsteps and become the NHL’s next elite puck-dominant undersized defenceman. My latest @eliteprospects: eliteprospects.com/news/2026…

Danny Briere on potential 7D Simon Benoit “Maybe he’s even higher in the lineup, why not?we like the physicality that he brings, and we like the size and the skating aspect”

Simon Benoit, acquired by PHI, is a big physical depth defenceman who can defend the slot sometimes but also chases hits in his own zone and has a lot of trouble getting the puck out.

Andrae is a strong puck-mover and a feisty and extremely committed puck battler who even throws hits. He is also 5'9 and an average-at-best skater who lacks high-end offensive skill. His results have been very good, but his coaches have generally played him in depth minutes.

What if I told you there’s a team in the same division as the Hurricanes that had both players and has repeatedly gone out of its way to draft and sign players with size
There are teams right now convincing themselves that they shouldn't draft defencemen like Shayne Gostisbehere and Sean Walker just because they're undersized. Both players just won the Stanley Cup. and honestly they're prob right bc the canes got them for really cheap

7/14 became top 4 or better NHLers. A 50% hit rate on a 1st round pick is good. A 50% hit rate with an alleged hockey flaw (“undersized”) shows that it might not be as grave as hockey men treat it to be.
Outcomes for defencemen smaller than 6'0 (182 cm) taken in the first round between 2005 and 2020

Oh??? Okay. Interesting. Woll has some intrigue for me. No earthly idea who Benoit is.
Toronto announces it has traded Joseph Woll and Simon Benoit to PHI for Samuel Ersson, Emil Andrae and a third-round pick.

Trading Jordan Spence would be a big, big mistake for Ottawa Acquiring Jordan Spence could be the best decision a GM makes this summer (data from Evolving-Hockey; filtered out ixG/60 since I didn't add positions in the data set - oops)
Rumours that the Sens are exploring the trade market for RFA Jordan Spence. Spence put up sparkling underlying numbers all season long and played big minutes for them down the stretch (over 21 per game after the Olympics) after being sheltered in the first half.
